Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1635: Laryngeal Cancer Cells Metabolize 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 and Respond to 24R,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 via a Mechanism Dependent on Estrogen Receptor Levels
Zvi Schwartz Studies have evaluated vitamin D3’s therapeutic potential in estrogen-responsive cancers, with conflicting findings. We have shown that the proliferation of breast cancer cells is regulated by 24R,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (24R,25(OH)2D3) depending on estrogen receptor alpha 66 (ERα66) expression, suggesting that this could also be the case for estrogen-sensitive laryngeal cancer cells. Accordingly, we examined levels of ERα isoforms in ERα66-positive UM-SCC-12 and ERα66-negative UM-SCC-11A cells and their response to 24R,25(OH)2D3. 24R,...

Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma originating in the subglottic larynx: A case report with imm unohistochemical study
Laryngoscopic images showing a red mass in the sub glottis (black arrow). Key Clinical MessageLaryngeal neuroendocrine carcinomas are the most common non-squamous neoplasm of the larynx. Due to the rarity of the tumor, pathological diagnosis should be confirmed by immunohistochemistry.AbstractLaryngeal neuroendocrine carcinomas (LNECs) are a rare cancer of the head and neck. Few case reports of poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma originating in the subglottic larynx exist within the literature. In this case, we discuss a 57-year-old patient with a history of four-month hoarseness with a newly diagnosed of poorly...

Current Status of Partial Laryngeal Surgery for Advanced Laryngeal Cancer: When and Why?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis paper aims to evaluate the evolution and current status of partial laryngeal surgery in the treatment of advanced laryngeal cancer (LC). Specifically, recent progress in the selection of both patients and tumors, together with surgical and rehabilitation innovations, have contributed to balancing oncological control with the maintenance of quality of life in na ïve and radiorecurrent patients. The main aspect is represented by the recognized role of open partial horizontal laryngectomies (OPHLs) in this new era of laryngeal cancer treatment.Recent FindingsRecent advancements highlight OPHLs ...

The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high disease burden of HPV-related cancer-related deaths in the CEE region, with a large economic impact to society due to substantial productivity losses. It is critical to implement and reinforce public health measures with the aim to reduce the incidence of HPV-related diseases, and the subsequent premature cancer deaths. Improving HPV screening and increasing vaccination programs, in both male and female populations, could help reduce this burden.PMID:38638098 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2341572 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1575: The Role of Estrogen and Estrogen Receptors in Head and Neck Tumors
etić Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the most common histological form of head and neck tumors (HNTs), which originate from the epithelium of the lips and oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, nasal cavity, and sinuses. The main risk factors include consumption of tobacco in all forms and alcohol, as well as infections with high-risk human papillomaviruses or the Epstein–Barr virus. Regardless of the etiological agent, the risk of developing different types of HNTs is from two to more than six times higher in males than in females. The reason for such disparities probably lies i...

Comparison of 3-year local control using DAHANCA radiotherapy guidelines before and after implementation of five millimetres geometrical GTV to high-dose CTV margin
CONCLUSION: DAHANCA radiotherapy guidelines based on a geometrically generated isotropic CTV1 margin led to less variation in treatment volumes and between centres than previous guidelines. The transition towards consensus GTV-CTV1 margins did not influence local tumour control. The majority of local recurrences were inside CTV1 and covered by the prescription dose.PMID:38636711 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2024.110284 (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology : journal of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology)

Open Organ Preservation for Laryngeal Cancer
As the treatment for laryngeal cancer has evolved over several decades, organ preservation has remained one of the goals of treatment. While chemoradiation therapy is the most widely used treatment modality, open surgical preservation techniques for laryngeal cancer continue to be an option in the surgeon's armamentarium. A summary of the history, anatomic considerations, principles of organ preservation and specific partial laryngectomy techniques are discussed in this review. Assessing radiation-induced carotid artery injury using ultrasound in patients with head and neck cancer
Head and neck cancers (HNC) are among the most prevalent malignant tumors worldwide. They encompass malignancies of the upper respiratory tract and gastrointestinal system, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, laryngeal carcinoma, tongue carcinoma, parotid gland carcinoma, and others [1]. The development of HNC is closely related to smoking, excessive drinking, chewing of betel nuts, and viral infection (HBV/HPV). The treatment of HNC includes surgery, radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology)

Imaging For Larynx Cancer Assessment
Imaging is critical in the evaluation and accurate staging of the patient with laryngeal cancer. Knowledge of relevant anatomy and characteristic patterns of tumor spread guides prognosis and facilitates treatment planning. Furthermore, imaging plays an important role in follow-up of the patient who has undergone successful treatment of their primary laryngeal cancer to detect recurrence and assess treatment-related complications. This review highlights the common imaging modalities used in laryngeal cancer imaging, unique anatomic considerations for each laryngeal subsite, and provides an overview of post-treatment survei...
