Private Lab owner income?
What would be the take home earnings range for an owner of a small to medium sized private reference lab? I have worked in several labs with gross revenues approaching the 10s of millions, but company revenues versus expenses at the town halls have often been break even. My dream is to someday own a small laboratory operation of my own specializing in hemepath, but I’m having a hard time believing I can turn a profit or take home a positive salary. Any perspective or thoughts? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Molecular Pathology
I am hiring manager for large national laboratory. Is there any reason to hire a board-certified molecular pathologist when a board-certified molecular geneticist can be hired to sign out molecular results for half the cost? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are these activities worth mentioning in my update letter?
I have a couple of things that I want to include in my update letter but I'm unsure as to whether or not they are significant enough. None of these activities were previously mentioned in my application. 1. Creating a protocol along with my PI and submitting it to IRB for approval worth mentioning in my update letter or does it have to be a recently published article? 2. Lead clinical research coordinator on a new clinical study. 3. Started working part-time as a Clinical Laboratory... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Path residents doubling as med techs
This from the CAP caught my eye… Slippery slope in my opinion. But it may be better than CP programs that just have residents read or cover AP in some way Clinical pathology selected abstracts - CAP TODAY September 2022—Clinical laboratory workforce shortages are an issue, in large part because it is difficult to find qualified testing personnel. Pathology residents present a solution to this problem because MD and DO residents who have current training certificates or medical licenses and who... www.captodayonline.com (Sou...

Going from MD/PhD to MD
I'm an incoming M1 to an MD/PhD program. I have done a lot of soul searching this summer, and I have decided that I don't want to go the MD/PhD route. I can't see myself doing the 80-20 lifestyle touted by physician-scientists. Working with patients and doing more clinically-focused research is much more exciting than laboratory bench work, and I don't see myself completing the PhD. How do I navigate telling this to the MD/PhD program directors? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Need help with salary and case load expectation
Hi all, I'm thinking of making the switch from academic to either private practice at a hospital or independent laboratory setting. I have few years of experience. Live in southern California. What are reasonable case loads for private or independent laboratory setting? I spoke to one lab, and they said 125-150 vials of biopsies per day. Is that average? And what is a reasonable salary for that type of caseload? Would appreciate any input! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

PhD Program Research Lab in Conjunction to specialty?
Hello, I wanted to specialize in clinical Neuropsychology and become a Neuropsychology researcher for a career goal. However, the laboratory I am admitted to studies children mental health and brain development (aka impact of trauma and abuse on brain structure and function in developing children). My question is: How often does it happen where the graduate student's lab is not very related to their clinical aspirations? for example, this program I am talking about has rich opportunities... Do I need to retake physics, if I took it in 2008 with an A?
Hi all, a quick question. I last took physics "for scientitsts and engineers" with laboratory (and with calculus) in 2008 and got an A. After taking that physics course, I took a more advanced one and got a B (that school did ot give out + / - grades). I have the option of retaking physics (with calculus) again, but geared toward the life sciences. I have contacted some local medical schools about whether I need to repeat, but I tend to get referred to their websites for the requirements... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is this EC worth including in my application?
Hello! I worked as a clinical research coordinator for around 2 months full time after I graduated with my degree. I left that job to move back home with my dad and study for the MCAT full time. I do think it was a great experience, as it was my first full time job and I got to see how clinical samples were tested and what the process of collecting those samples and compiling them looked like. I had half office and half laboratory duties- sorting clinical data as well as samples that our... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
