Crosslinking kiwifruit-derived DNA with natural aromatic aldehydes generates membranolytic antibacterial nanogels
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Nov 9:127947. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127947. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImproper use of antibiotics has led to the global rise of drug-resistant biofilm bacteria. Thus, researchers have been increasingly interested in green materials that are highly biocompatible and have low toxicity. Here, nanogels (NGs) with imine bonds were synthesized by crosslinking kiwifruit-derived DNA's primary amine and aromatic aldehydes (cuminaldehyde, p-anisaldehyde, or vanillin) under water-in-hexane emulsion processes. Transmission electron microscope showed that the NGs had spherical geometry with an avera...

Rapid detection of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae by electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy
Talanta. 2023 Oct 24;268(Pt 1):125336. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2023.125336. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacterial cancer caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is a major threat to kiwifruit in the world, and there is still a lack of effective control measures. The field of bacterial detection needs a fast, easy-to-use and sensitive identification platform. The current bacterial identification methods are lack of time efficiency, which brings problems to many sectors of society. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and electrochemistry (EC) have been studied as possible candidates for bacterial detectio...

Kiwi-derived Extracellular Vesicles for Oral Delivery of Sorafenib
In this study, kiwifruit-derived extracellular vesicles (KEVs) were isolated and purified from kiwifruit, and their natural hepatic accumulation properties were exploited for targeted delivery of sorafenib (KEVs-SFB). Evidence showed that encapsulation of KEVs reduced the leakage of sorafenib in the gastrointestinal environment and enhanced the ability to cross the intestinal epithelium; KEVs-SFB was able to achieve liver accumulation and was predominantly taken up by HepG2 cells; KEVs-SFB was effective in inhibiting 4T1 cell proliferation; in the orthotopic liver cancer model, oral administration of KEVs-SFB inhibited tum...

Toxic elements pollution risk as affected by various input sources in soils of greenhouses, kiwifruit orchards, cereal fields, and forest/grassland
This study aimed to estimate the vulnerability of different agricultural systems with unequal high fertilizer input practices regarding toxic element pollution in the greenhouse, kiwifruit orchard, cereal field, and forest/grassland. Soil samples were collected from 181 sites across Shaanxi Province, China, and analyzed for selected characteristics and toxic elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn). The contamination factor (CFx) represents the ratio of the measured value of the toxic element in the soil over the soil background values. The CFx values of all the toxic elements were above background values, while Cd and Hg...

Effect of in vitro digestion and fermentation of kiwifruit pomace polysaccharides on structural characteristics and human gut microbiota
This study delves into the digestive behavior and fermentation characteristics of kiwifruit pomace polysaccharides (KFP) through an in vitro simulated saliva-gastrointestinal digestion and fecal fermentation. The results reveal that following simulated digestion of KFP, its molecular weight reduced by 4.7 %, and the reducing sugar (CR) increased by 9.5 %. However, the monosaccharide composition and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy characteristics showed no significant changes, suggesting that KFP remained undigested. Furthermore, even after saliva-gastrointestinal digestion, KFP retained in vitro hypolipidemic and h...

Development of Analytical Method and Surveillance ofGibberellic Acid in Banana, Cherry, and Kiwi Fruit
Shokuhin Eiseigaku Zasshi. 2023;64(4):123-129. doi: 10.3358/shokueishi.64.123.ABSTRACTGibberellic acid (GA3) is commonly used as a plant growth regulator in many food crops owing to its essential signaling functions during plant growth and development. In Japan, a threshold for administrative action for GA3 content of 0.3 mg/kg applies in produce in which maximum residue limits have not been established. Although the threshold is based on previous studies, the GA3 concentrations in individual foods are still unknown. Thus, we surveyed the concentrations of GA3 in banana, cherry, and kiwi fruit on the Japanese market. We de...
