Scattered high-energy synchrotron radiation at the   KARA visible-light diagnostic beamline
To characterize an electron beam, visible synchrotron light is often used and dedicated beamlines at synchrotron sources are becoming a more common feature as instruments and methods for the diagnostics are, along with the accelerators, further developed. At KARA (Karlsruhe Research Accelerator), such a beamline exists and is based on a typical infrared/visible-light configuration. From experience at such beamlines no significant radiation was expected (dose rates larger than 0.5   µ Sv   h − 1). This was found not to be the case and a higher dose was measured which fortunately could be shielded to an acceptable lev...

Identifying the Best Initial Oral Antibiotics for Adults with Community-Acquired Pneumonia: A Network Meta-Analysis
ConclusionWe observed trends toward a better clinical response and lower mortality for quinolones as empiric antibiotics for CAP, but found no conclusive evidence of any antibiotic being clearly more effective than another. More trials are needed to inform guideline recommendations on the most effective antibiotic regimens for outpatients with mild to moderate CAP. (Source: Journal of General Internal Medicine)

Synthesis and structure-activity relationships of novel 14-membered 2-fluoro ketolides with structural modification at the C11 position
Eur J Med Chem. 2024 Feb 3;267:116181. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2024.116181. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA series of novel C11 substituted 14-membered 2-fluoro ketolides were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial activity against erythromycin-resistant and erythromycin-susceptible clinical isolates and strains from ATCC. The overall antibacterial spectra of the semi-synthetic antibiotics are similar to that of telithromycin (TEL) and most of them exhibited excellent activity against Gram-positive bacteria (S. epidermidis, S. pneumoniae, S. aureus) and several Gram-negative bacteria (M. catarrhalis, H. influenza)...

Genotypic characterization, antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence determinants of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolated from pastured poultry farms
In conclusion, the results of this study revealed that Campylobacter isolates from pasture-raised poultry farms showed the ST relatedness to Campylobacter isolates commonly associated with humans, indicating pasture-raised broiler flocks, similar to conventionally-reared broiler flocks, as a potential vector for antibiotic-resistant and pathogenic strains of thermophilic Campylobacter to humans. Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1327: Design, Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Conjugates of 3-O-Descladinose-azithromycin and Nucleobases against rRNA A2058G- or A2059G-Mutated Strains
hua Liang Structurally unrelated antibiotics MLSB (macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B) compromised with clinically resistant pathogens because of the cross-resistance resulting from the structural modification of rRNA A2058. The structure–activity relationships of a novel 3-O-descladinose azithromycin chemotype conjugating with nucleobases were fully explored with the aid of engineered E. coli SQ110DTC and SQ110LPTD. The conjugates of macrolides with nucleobases, especially adenine, displayed antibacterial superiority over telithromycin, azithromycin and clindamycin against rRNA A2058/2059-mutated engi...

Synthesis and antibacterial activity of novel 2-fluoro ketolide antibiotics with 11,12-quinoylalkyl side chains
Bioorg Med Chem Lett. 2022 Dec 24:129115. doi: 10.1016/j.bmcl.2022.129115. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA series of novel 2-fluoro ketolide antibiotics with 11,12-quinoylalkyl side chains derived from telithromycin and cethromycin were designed and synthesized. The corresponding targets 2a-o were tested for their in vitro activities against a series of macrolide-sensitive and macrolide-resistant pathogens. Some of them showed a similar antibacterial spectrum and comparable or slightly better activity to telithromycin. Among them, compounds 2g and 2k, displayed excellent activities against macrolide-sensitive and macrolide...

Genetic characteristics, antimicrobial resistance, and prevalence of Arcobacter spp. isolated from various sources in Shenzhen, China
Arcobacter spp. is a globally emerging zoonotic and foodborne pathogen. However, little is known about its prevalence and antimicrobial resistance in China. To investigate the prevalence of Arcobacter spp. isolated from various sources, 396 samples were collected from human feces, chicken cecum, and food specimens including chicken meat, beef, pork, lettuce, and seafood. Arcobacter spp. was isolated by the membrane filtration method. For 92 strains, the agar dilution method and next-generation sequencing were used to investigate their antimicrobial resistance and to obtain whole genome data, respectively. The virulence fac...
