Reaching New Heights: A Comprehensive Study of Hand Transplantations in Korea after Institutionalization of Hand Transplantation Law
CONCLUSION: Hand transplantation is a viable reconstructive option, and patients have shown positive functional and psychological outcomes. Although this study has limitations, such as the small number of patients and short follow-up period, we should focus on continued recovery of hand function, and be careful not to develop side effects from immunosuppressive drugs. Through the present study, we will continue to strive for a bright future regarding hand transplantation in Korea.PMID:38288651 | PMC:PMC10827641 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2023.0365 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)

Evaluation of the Regulatory Required Post-Authorization Safety Study for Propacetamol: Nested Case-Control and Case-Time-Control Studies
CONCLUSION: In both nested case-control and CTC analyses, propacetamol was not associated with an increased risk of anaphylaxis, thrombosis, or SJS. The findings from this study, which used routinely collected clinical data, provide reassuring real-world evidence regarding the safety of propacetamol in a nationwide population to support regulatory decision-making.PMID:38288652 | PMC:PMC10827637 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2023.0207 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)

Beneficial Effects of Low-Grade Mitochondrial Stress on Metabolic Diseases and Aging
Yonsei Med J. 2024 Feb;65(2):55-69. doi: 10.3349/ymj.2023.0131.ABSTRACTMitochondria function as platforms for bioenergetics, nutrient metabolism, intracellular signaling, innate immunity regulators, and modulators of stem cell activity. Thus, the decline in mitochondrial functions causes or correlates with diabetes mellitus and many aging-related diseases. Upon stress or damage, the mitochondria elicit a series of adaptive responses to overcome stress and restore their structural integrity and functional homeostasis. These adaptive responses to low-level or transient mitochondrial stress promote health and resilience to up...

Aetiology and Prognosis of Encephalitis in Korean Children: A Retrospective Single-Centre Study, 2005-2020
CONCLUSION: This large-scale study showed that autoimmune and infectious causes accounted for a significant proportion of encephalitis in Korean children. Further studies are needed to determine whether early targeted treatment following early diagnosis leads to a favourable prognosis in these populations.PMID:38288648 | PMC:PMC10827636 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2023.0250 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)

Retention Rates and Successful Treatment with Antiseizure Medications in Newly-Diagnosed Epilepsy Patients
CONCLUSION: Second-generation ASMs have the advantage of more successful treatment with fewer ASM regimen changes compared with first-generation drugs. Various comorbid conditions as well as age and sex should be considered when selecting ASMs.PMID:38288649 | PMC:PMC10827640 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2022.0539 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)

Exploring the Safety and Efficacy of Organic Light-Emitting Diode in Skin Rejuvenation and Wound Healing
CONCLUSION: This study established comparable effectiveness between OLED and LED irradiation in upregulating collagen and growth factor expression levels while downregulating MMP levels in vitro. In the UV-irradiated animal skin model, OLED exposure post UV radiation correlated with reduced skin wrinkles and augmented dermal collagen density. Accelerated wound recovery and demonstrated safety further underscore OLEDs' potential as a future PBM modality alongside LEDs, offering promise in the realms of skin rejuvenation and wound healing.PMID:38288650 | PMC:PMC10827635 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2023.0125 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)

Questionnaire-Based Survey of Diabetes Self-Care Activities and Barriers among Young Korean Adults with Early-Onset Diabetes
CONCLUSION: Young adults with early-onset diabetes showed a greater barrier to regular exercise and poor compliance with foot care and blood sugar testing. Healthcare providers must strengthen their relationship with young adults with diabetes to provide more education and guidelines for lifestyle modification focused on exercise and to promote higher compliance with diabetic self-care activities for improving clinical outcomes.PMID:38154479 | PMC:PMC10774646 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2023.0183 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)
