A profile of morbidity and mortality rounds within resident training programs of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons
ConclusionMMR are commonly incorporated in surgical resident training programs. The primary objectives of these rounds are to educate residents, refine hospital medical and operational policies, and to improve patient care. The majority of residency programs view MMR as worthwhile. However, the majority of veterinary residency programs fail to follow up MMR with formal initiatives for improvement and objective outcome assessments for issues identified during MMR. Fluorescein sodium ‐guided resection of intracranial lesions in 22 dogs
ConclusionThe intraoperative use of FS is a simple and safe technique to guide the resection of intracranial lesions in dogs. The findings on Gd enhancement, FS staining, and histopathology appeared to agree but require validation in a larger set of cases. Clinical SignificanceThe intraoperative use of FS may improve the prognosis of dogs with brain tumors by guiding the resection of lesions. (Source: Veterinary Surgery)

Complications associated with surgical dehorning in goats: A retrospective study of 239 cases
ConclusionSurgical dehorning of goats results in a high rate of complications; however, the majority of these complications are minor and do not affect health and performance of the goats. Goats experiencing complications weighed significantly more than goats without complications. Clinical significanceSurgical dehorning of goats requires minimal aftercare and results in a low rate of serious complications. (Source: Veterinary Surgery)

Minimally invasive lag screw fixation of sacroiliac luxation/fracture using a dedicated novel instrument system: Apparatus and technique description
ConclusionThe SILIS addresses limitations associated with MIO of SIL/F, including maintenance of reduction throughout surgery along with reliable and accurate sacral screw placement. Distance from the X‐ray source is the most effective protection against radiation. Use of the SILIS allows the surgical team to move away from the C‐arm during fluoroscopy, thereby reducing personnel exposure to dangerous direct and back‐scattered ionizing radiation. Complications and short ‐term outcomes associated with single‐port laparoscopic splenectomy in dogs
ConclusionSingle‐port laparoscopic splenectomy is an effective approach for elective splenectomy in dogs. The technique may be well suited to smaller dogs with modestly sized splenic masses or diffuse splenic disease. (Source: Veterinary Surgery)

Perceptions and opinions of pet owners in the United Sates about surgery, pain management, and anesthesia in dogs and cats
ConclusionImproving our understanding of pet owners' perceptions and knowledge related to anesthesia, surgery, and pain may lead to improved client education, satisfaction, and compliance with administration of analgesics. (Source: Veterinary Surgery)

Control of hemorrhage through the osteotomy gap during tibial plateau leveling osteotomy: 9 cases
ConclusionArterial hemorrhage during the radial osteotomy of a TPLO can be controlled by occlusion of the compromised artery through distraction of the osteotomy gap. This technique was not associated with long‐term complications. (Source: Veterinary Surgery)

Risk factors for tibial damage associated with the modified Maquet technique in 174 stifles
ConclusionBased on these results, preventive measures against tibial damage associated with MMT should include: a thickness of cortical hinge based on the equation related to the BW; a length of osteotomy adjusted to the amount of TTA with an osteotomy angle below 10°; and slow advancement of the tibial tuberosity. Median sternotomy versus intercostal thoracotomy for lung lobectomy: A comparison of short ‐term outcome in 134 dogs
ConclusionIn a surgical procedure that does not preclude either approach, ICT may be more desirable than MS in terms of postoperative pain, oxygenation, and complications. However, since no other short‐term measure of outcome differed, we can state that both MS and ICT are well tolerated by dogs. (Source: Veterinary Surgery)

In vitro chemosensitivity of feline injection site ‐associated sarcoma cell lines to carboplatin
ConclusionElution of carboplatin from CI‐CSH beads generate concentrations sufficient to result in 50% growth inhibition of FISAS cells in vitro. Local tumor control might be achieved by implantation of CI‐CSH beads immediately following radical or marginal excision of the primary tumor or by implantation without tumor resection. Standing thyroidectomy in 10 horses
ConclusionThyroidectomy can safely be performed with the horse standing and sedated with local anesthesia. Clinical relevancePerforming standing thyroidectomy does not increase intraoperative or postoperative complications and could be considered for horses with thyroid enlargement amenable to surgery. Kinematic behavior of a novel pedicle screw ‐rod fixation system for the canine lumbosacral joint
ConclusionThe combination of a polyaxial pedicle screw‐rod system and intervertebral spacer provides a versatile solution of surgical stabilization of the lumbosacral joint following surgical decompression in the canine lumbosacral spine. The increase in motion at L6‐L7 may suggest the potential for adjacent level effects and clinical trials should be designed to address this question. Clinical relevanceThese results support the feasibility of using this new implant system for the management of degenerative lumbosacral disease in dogs.
