OVs need a bit more than love
The UK’s future trading relationship with Europe is as uncertain today as it was on June 24, 2016, the day of the Brexit referendum result, and that is likely to remain the case for months. There are a range of EU exit scenarios available – anything from full single market access to third country status – but as Brexit negotiators began their fourth round of talks this week, prime minister Theresa May had already ruled out some options that already exist for non-EU countries (EEA membership, like Norway, or a free trade deal like Canada, for example). Instead, she made it clear she wanted a bespoke or &ls...

No action likely on slaughter without stunning
IN her Comment on the content of the manifestos of the political parties (VR, May 27 2017, vol 180, p 506), Adele Waters notes that no political party proposes to end slaughter without stunning and suggests that the alternative of a requirement to label meat from such slaughter could be more easily achieved post-Brexit. It is true that it is always easier for one country to take a decision than to come an agreement between 28 countries. However, it should be realised that the UK has always led the opposition at European level to proposals to take any action on slaughter without stunning. The UK Commissioner blocked a draft...

Holly leaf ingestion causing pharyngeal obstruction in lambs
WE would like to report the case of a three-week-old texel ewe lamb that presented to us showing respiratory distress, blood-tinged hypersalivation, oral pain and dysphagia. Palpation of the laryngeal region induced pain and exacerbated the respiratory distress. Visualisation of the pharyngeal region was not possible in the fully conscious animal and therefore heavy sedation was induced. A laryngoscope was used to see the pharynx which revealed a holly leaf lodged in front of the larynx, which was quite easily removed with artery forceps (Fig 1). A long acting antibiotic injection (Betamox LA; Norbrook) was administered to...

Transfusion medicine across the species
Wendy Barnett comments: I would like to apologise to Mr Barr for this inaccuracy. This was an accidental oversight and I appreciate that equine plasma has been available for longer than canine blood and plasma products. As this book is focused on small animal transfusion medicine and blood banking, my comment was referencing the availability of canine blood and plasma products. I still consider canine transfusion medicine to be in its infancy but I accept that I should have specified the species within my review. Wendy Barnett, Pet Blood Bank UK, Unit 21 & 22, Loughborough Technology Centre, Epinal Way, Loughborough, L...

Transfusion medicine across the species
I WOULD like to respectfully draw attention to the inaccuracies in Wendy Barnett's recent review of the publication, Manual of Veterinary Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking (VR, May 20, 2017, vol 180, p 502). Commercial equine plasma was first produced on this site in July 1992 and was made available to equine veterinary surgeons in the UK for the foaling season in 1993 and every year thereafter in increasing quantities. Since 2003 it has been supplied as a licensed immunological veterinary medicinal product in the UK and since 2008 in the Republic of Ireland, and under the prescribing cascade elsewhere. I would not ag...
