Progress and Promise of Biomarker Discovery and Development in Urologic Disease
Over the past several years, there has been an enormous amount of research in biomarkers in both benign and malignant urologic conditions. Scientific advances using a multitude of various -omics pathways, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, radiomics, microbiomics, and other methods using olfaction-based research have afforded investigators with multiple new tools to interrogate blood, urine, seminal fluid, and tissue for promising novel biomarkers. Furthermore, the efficiency and cost associated with these analyses have dramatically improved, resulting in an ability to perform larger-scale inves...

The Continued Pursuit of Urologic Biomarkers: Beyond Prostate-Specific Antigen
Urologists have utilized biomarkers for almost the past century. Gutman and Gutman1,2 discovered and reported on the utility of acid phosphatase in the 1930s. Prostate-specific antigen was identified in 1970,3 and for the next several decades, prostate cancer received most of the attention of biomarker applications in urologic practice.4 (Source: Urologic Clinics of North America)

Testosterone and the Androgen Receptor
Testosterone is a steroid hormone that is responsible for the development of normal male sexual characteristics and function as well as the maintenance of homeostasis among multiple organ systems throughout life. Testosterone production is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary axis under the direction of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and luteinizing hormone. The testosterone-bound androgen receptor (AR) is a potent regulator of gene expression and may regulate a significant proportion of genes in prostate cells. Therapeutic modulation of testosterone levels and AR signaling activity can be achieved by several different ...

Androgenic Steroids Use and Abuse
Androgenic steroids have been abused by elite athletes for decades. Their performance-enhancing properties for sports that involve strength and power have been confirmed, and this class has been banned from most elite athletic competitions since the mid-1970s. There is a risk of a withdrawal syndrome that includes severe depression, and there seems to be an increased risk of cardiovascular disease associated with chronic abuse. In contrast to high-dosage androgen abuse, androgen therapy at near-physiological dosages is generally safe and effective for male hypogonadism and potential use in sarcopenia and male hormonal cont...
