Medical Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
In this article, we review the primary medical treatments of BPH-associated male LUTS, with a focus on physiology, indications, and side effects. We cover selective alpha-1 antagonists, anticholinergics, PDE5 inhibitors, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, and beta-3 agonists. Through a review of the literature, we provide our clinical pathway for the medical management of BPH, generally starting with tamsulosin in most men and progressing to combination therapy based on patient ’s response and symptoms. Medical Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common source of morbidity and require significant health care resources for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Antimicrobials represent the mainstay for the treatment of UTIs. Established guidelines exist for the antimicrobial treatment and prevention of uncomplicated UTIs; however, antimicrobial dependence and overuse have led to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Nonantimicrobial alternatives are an ongoing area of research and should be considered when clinically appropriate based on available evidence. (Source: Urologic Clinics of North America)

Nutraceuticals and Phytotherapy in Men's Health: Antioxidants, Pro-oxidants, and a Novel Opportunity for Lifestyle Changes
Patients using nutraceuticals represent a diverse patient population with a keen potential interest and/or adherence to healthy lifestyle changes. BPH nutraceuticals, including saw palmetto were as safe, but not more effective than placebo in the STEP and CAMUS clinical trials, but another high-quality saw palmetto product could be tested in a phase 3 trial. Several other BPH supplements need more recent robust clinical data, environmental oversight, or safety data. ED supplements, including Panax ginseng, and the notable nitric oxide (NO) enhancing amino acids arginine and citrulline have positive preliminary short-term e...

A Profound Past and a Very Bright Future: Minimally Invasive Urology
Since its inception as a subspecialty of surgery in the late 1800s, innovations in treatment in urology have been driven by the creative minds of urologic surgeons and by parallel advances in operative technology. Beginning with the first cystoscopes that enabled visualization of the human bladder for diagnostic purposes to resectoscopes, advances in kidney stone treatments that eliminated open surgery and more recently laparoscopy, robotics, and focal therapy, the march of advances in techniques and technologies continues. One Small Step for a Urologist, One Giant Leap for Urologic Surgery
To Americans of a certain age, the date of July 20, 1969 is etched forever in their memory. That is the day that Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon with the words, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” The “a” was lost in radio static. Accompanied by Buzz Aldrin, he changed the future of mankind. (Source: Urologic Clinics of North America)
