Lifestyle in young adults with and without a psychotic disorder
Conclusions</span> Young adults with a psychotic disorder have an unhealthy lifestyle and also more risk factors compared to controls. Lifestyle screening programmes are important to discuss health risks in time and which steps for improvement can be taken. The step from insight to actual more healthy behaviour is challenging.PMID:38512145 (Source: Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie)

Neuropsychiatric associations in Belgium: from foundation to separation (1869-2008)
Conclusion</span> Over time, the neuropsychiatric associations have helped define the identity of neurology and psychiatry. On the other hand, the associations themselves have been subject to both substantive factors, i.e. the evolution of the discipline, and non-substantive factors. The latter are specific to Belgium and concern linguistic struggles and a historically created split between scientific associations and professional associations.PMID:38512146 (Source: Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie)

High lithium serum level as maintenance treatment of rapid cycling bipolar disorder
Tijdschr Psychiatr. 2024;66(2):97-100.ABSTRACTBipolar disorder with a rapid cycling course can be difficult to treat, often involving therapy resistance. A 55-year old patient with bipolar disorder with rapid cycling course did not stabilize for years, despite various pharmacotherapeutic treatments. Only after lithium was introduced as a maintenance treatment at a level of around 1.20 mmol/l, a long-term stabilization of mood developed which also persisted. A literature review was performed which concluded that maintenance treatment with lithium at levels above 1.0 mmol/l in patients with rapid cycling bipolar disorder has...

Recurrent depressive disorder associated with an atypical CADASIL syndrome
Tijdschr Psychiatr. 2024;66(2):107-111.ABSTRACTA 55-year-old man with recurrent depressive episodes, with onset at age 45, was admitted to hospital after a suicide attempt. Due to a recent stroke as well as a family history of stroke and depression, CADASIL (prevalence of 2-5 per 100.000) was considered as a possible diagnosis. Although depression is common in CADASIL, the initial presentation is not typically comprised of recurrent depressions. Brain MRI, however, did not show the characteristic white matter lesions in the anterior temporal lobe. Genetic analysis revealed a cysteine-sparing mutation (Arg61Trp) in the NOTC...
