All-cause and cause-specific mortality among low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer survivors in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our findings provide reassurance regarding low overall and cause-specific mortality rates in individuals with low-risk DTC. Additional research is necessary to confirm and understand the increased mortality for certain subsequent cancers.PMID:38149602 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0449 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Maternal Thyroid Dysfunction During Pregnancy as an Etiologic Factor in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Challenges and Opportunities for Research
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, evidence supported a positive association between maternal thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy and ASD outcomes in the child, especially for hypothyroidism. Future studies could reduce misclassification bias by using laboratory measures instead of medical records to ascertain thyroid dysfunction and evaluating children for ASD at an age when it can be reliably detected. Survival bias could be further mitigated by adjusting models for more factors associated with fetal survival and ASD. Additional research is needed to comprehensively understand the roles of maternal levothyroxine treatment, iodine de...

Inhibition of MEK signaling attenuates cancer stem cell activity in anaplastic thyroid cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Our analyses demonstrated the presence of CSC in ATC cells. The inhibition of CSC activity by the MEK signaling could partially account for the efficacy of the combined treatment shown in ATC patients. However, our studies also showed that not all CSC activity was totally abolished, which may account for the recurrence observed in ATC patients. Our findings have provided new insights into the molecular basis of efficacy and limitations of these drugs in ATC patients.PMID:38115586 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0521 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Regulation of thyroid hormone gatekeepers by TSH in tanycytes
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that, TSH induces transcriptional regulation of TH gatekeeper genes in tanycytes through the Tshr/Gαq/PKC pathway, in parallel to the Tshr/Gαs/PKA/CREB pathway. These differential actions of TSH on tanycytic subpopulations appear to be important for coordinating the supply of TH to the hypothalamus and aid its functions.PMID:38115594 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0375 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Rural-urban Disparities in the Continuum of Thyroid Cancer Care: Analysis of 92,794 cases
CONCLUSION: Compared to their urban counterparts, rural and frontier patients with thyroid cancer present with later-stage disease and experience higher disease-specific mortality. They also are more often lost to follow-up, which presents an opportunity for targeted outreach to reduce the observed disparities in outcomes.PMID:38115602 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0357 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Assessing Fear of Thyroid Cancer in the General U.S. Population: A Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: Thyroid cancer-specific fear is prevalent in U.S. adults particularly in females and those younger than 40 years. Because disease-specific fear is associated with overtreatment, targeted education about the seriousness, incidence, and risk factors for developing thyroid cancer may decrease public fear and possibly overtreatment related to "scared decision making."PMID:38115606 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0479 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Prevalence of differentiated high-grade thyroid carcinoma among well-differentiated tumors: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Following the current WHO indications, some tumors will be reclassified as DHGTC. The proportion of tumors with high-grade features is relevant in FTC, solid trabecular and histologically aggressive PTC subtypes. A remarkable enrichment in DHGTC among patients with poor prognosis confirms the negative impact of high-grade features on outcome.PMID:38115626 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0350 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)
