Anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation and end-stage kidney disease on hemodialysis: a meta-analysis of randomized trials comparing direct oral anticoagulants with vitamin K antagonists
CONCLUSION: Orally administered activated factor X inhibitors carried a similar risk of bleeding and death when compared with VKAs in patients with NVAF undergoing chronic hemodialysis. Moreover, there was a trend towards a reduction of thromboembolic events or stroke in patients receiving DOACs.PMID:38404942 | PMC:PMC10885786 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102332 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Primary prevention of venous thromboembolism for cancer patients in randomized controlled trials: a bibliographical analysis of funding and trial characteristics
CONCLUSION: There were few significant differences between trial characteristics, suggesting that the evidence from commercially sponsored trials investigating VTE prophylaxis in patients with cancer is unlikely to be subject to bias attributable to commercial sponsorship.PMID:38404943 | PMC:PMC10884502 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102315 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Impact of adverse pregnancy outcomes on brain vascular health and cognition
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2024 Jan 30;8(1):102331. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102331. eCollection 2024 Jan.ABSTRACTA State of the Art lecture titled "Impact of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes on Brain Vascular Health and Cognition" was presented at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Congress in 2023. Adverse pregnancy outcomes, encompassing conditions such as gestational hypertension, eclampsia, preeclampsia, preterm birth, fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, and gestational diabetes, may form part of an underrecognized pathway from early adulthood reproductive health factors to later-life vascular cognitiv...

A novel technique to quantify the kinetics of blood clot contraction based on the expulsion of fluorescently labeled albumin into serum
CONCLUSIONS: The resulting clot contraction dynamics based on the expulsion of FITC-albumin can be quantified using a number of kinetic parameters as well as a phase kinetics analysis. The advantages and drawbacks of the new technique are discussed.PMID:38401713 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2024.02.012 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Comparison of thrombotic adverse events in patients treated with factor VIII products and emicizumab using the 2018-2022 FAERS data
CONCLUSION: Thrombotic AEs in the FAERS data were about three times more frequently reported for emicizumab than for FVIII products. More research and efforts in the future are warranted for monitoring, elucidating, and preventing the potential risk of thrombotic AEs of hemophilia therapy, including emicizumab.PMID:38395359 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2024.02.009 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Involvement of peptidylarginine deiminase 4 in eosinophil extracellular trap formation and contribution to citrullinated histone signal in thrombi
CONCLUSIONS: As in NETosis, PAD4 can catalyze the formation of EETs. Inhibition of PAD4 decreases EET formation, supporting the future utility of PAD4 inhibitors as possible antithrombotic agents.PMID:38395360 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2024.02.010 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

No Genetic Causality between Tobacco Smoking and Venous Thromboembolism: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study
CONCLUSION: Evidence from both univariate and multivariable MR analyses demonstrated no significant causal relationships between current and past tobacco smoking and VTE, DVT, and PE. This contradicts positive correlations reported in some previous observational studies, which may be explained by other confounding factors. This provided genetic evidence for the conclusion reported in other observational studies that smoking did not affect VTE risk.PMID:38387601 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1781425 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Contractility defects hinder glycoprotein VI-mediated platelet activation and affect platelet functions beyond clot contraction
CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of both active contractile and passive crosslinking roles of myosin IIA in the platelet cytoskeleton. They support the hypothesis that highly contractile platelets are needed for hemostasis and further suggest a supportive role for myosin IIA in GPVI signaling.PMID:38379711 | PMC:PMC10877441 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102322 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)
