Authoritarianism and support for Trump in the 2016 presidential election
Publication date: Available online 24 July 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Jonathan Knuckey, Komysha HassanAbstractThe emergence of authoritarianism as a core political value has been emphasized by recent scholarship on the political behavior of the American electorate. This paper adds to this literature by examining the effect of authoritarianism in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Given the campaign style of Trump and the issues that he made salient in his campaign, it is hypothesized that authoritarianism should have a substantial effect on vote choice of whites. Using data from the American Nationa...

Common approaches for studying advocacy: Review of methods and model practices of the Advocacy Coalition Framework
Publication date: Available online 12 July 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Jonathan J. Pierce, Leanne S. Giordono, Holly L. Peterson, Katherine C. HicksAbstractThe Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) is a theoretical framework widely applied by public policy scholars to study advocacy. Since its inception in 1986 by Paul Sabatier, the framework has been applied hundreds of times across the globe to various policy issues. One side effect of this growth and diversification is a lack of common methodological approaches. Inspired by historic calls to balance generalizable knowledge-of-policy process with contex...

Perceived outgroup characteristics as antecedents and consequences of moral exclusion
Publication date: Available online 11 July 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Márton HadaricsAbstractThe literature of group-based moral exclusion emphasizes that the two main reasons for excluding certain groups from the boundaries of moral regard are perceived threat and social distance. Nonetheless, we cannot rule out the possibility that these two variables are not just antecedents but also posterior justifications for moral exclusion. To reveal this possibility, applying a two-wave cross-lagged panel design, we tested the temporal directions of the relationships between group-based moral exclusion on th...

Are people fussy about who they work with? An experimental test of Becker’s coworker discrimination hypothesis
Publication date: Available online 9 July 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Ali Ahmed, Mats HammarstedtAbstractWe used an experiment to investigate whether people’s decisions over employment opportunities are affected by the ethnicity and sex of their potential future coworkers. University students (N = 1,406) were asked to state the lowest hourly wage rate at which they would be willing to accept a job on a campus food truck, where they would work alongside the food truck owner. The ethnicity and sex of the food truck owners were randomized across participants. Results showed no signs of coworke...

Worksite wellness program implementation in county organizations: Exploring strategies for success
This study assesses what factors are important to WWP implementation in county government organizations. Through a conventional content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005) of interview data collected from 18 county government WWP managers, the results provide support to earlier work regarding strategies for successful WWP implementation. However, the results also add to the literature in several ways. While the importance of leadership support is well-documented, this study finds that marketing and communication strategies, which typically focus on promoting employee participation, can also be used to encourage leadership buy...

Reconsidering poverty dynamics by analyzing housing spells
Publication date: Available online 4 July 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Prentiss A. DantzlerAbstractThis note reconsiders Bane and Ellwood’s (1986) research on poverty spells. Instead of focusing on cash benefits as a form of public assistance, this note uses time periods on housing assistance as an alternative way to understand poverty dynamics. Housing expenses are the largest costs for families throughout the United States. Using data from the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics from 1987 to 2011, this note undertakes an alternative methodological technique for understanding the dynamics of poverty spel...

Status perception, residential context and subjective wellbeing among South Korean adults: A multilevel analysis of primary survey data
This study examines the multilevel associations between perceived socioeconomic status (SES) and subjective wellbeing (SWB) among community residing South Korean adults. Based on primary survey data, this research provides evidence on the contingent ways in which status perception and wellbeing are associated across individual and contextual (residential-community) levels. Three related but distinct questions guide the analysis. First, net of objective SES indicators (income, education, employment status, homeownership and financial assets), is perceived status related to SWB? Second, is the community-level status, net of ...

Dimensions and validation of the print perceived message sensation value scale (PPMSV)
Publication date: Available online 15 June 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Donald W. Helme, Lisanne F.M. Grant, Bobi Ivanov, Stephanie K. Van SteeAbstractTwo studies establish reliability and validity of the print perceived message sensation value scale (PPMSV). For study one, 397 participants responded to a single high- and a single low-sensation value anti-smoking message. In study two, 284 participants responded to a single high- and a single low-sensation value anti-crystal meth message. Results of an exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis suggest that the PMSV of a print message ...

Better schools or different students? The impact of immigration reform on school-level student achievement
This study examines the consequences of two controversial Arizona immigration laws, the Legal Arizona Workers Act and SB 1070, on school enrollment and student achievement trends. In the period after implementation of both policies, Arizona public schools have demonstrated growth in student achievement on standardized tests arguably due to the state education policies. We propose an alternative explanation and show that the observed achievement gains in schools resulted both due to academic improvement and partially because of the attrition of the low achieving students from certain type of schools. Using data from Arizona...

Shades of Blue: A review of the hiring, recruitment, and selection of female and minority police officers
Publication date: Available online 1 June 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Richard H. DonohueAbstractDiversity of police personnel, especially regarding representation of female and racial/ethnic minority officers, is an important step in improving positive police-community relations. Historically, both female and minority applicants have faced challenges in recruitment, hiring, and selection. By systematically reviewing literature available from 2000 to present, this paper identifies persistent challenges and programs aimed at overcoming such deficits in the United States. The studies use samples ranging f...
