Early voting, direct democracy, and voter mobilization
This study aims to evaluate whether direct democracy campaign contact can stimulate peripheral voter usage of early voting options, thereby helping to equalize rates of electoral participation between core and peripheral voter groups. Using voter survey data from the 2016 US presidential election in Escambia County, Florida, the analysis shows that while core voters tend to use early voting options, peripheral voters contacted by a direct democracy campaign can be mobilized into voting absentee. This result suggests that direct democracy reforms, and the ballot measure campaigns accompanying them, can help bring about a mo...

My sustainable city — Exploring lay people’s conception of sustainable urban design
Publication date: Available online 30 August 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Gustav Bösehans, Ian WalkerAbstractThe new urbanism movement has repeatedly stressed the importance of dimensions such as density, land use and passive solar design in urban sustainability. However, little is known about lay people's conception of these constructs. If the urban environment is to be designed to prioritise people, understanding how they conceive of sustainability becomes important. The present study investigated lay people's conceptions of sustainable urban design by asking them to build their own cities with the u...

However, in the short run, the association between marijuana and alcohol varies based on different drinking habits...

Tourism and hospitality market structure: A theoretical discussion
Publication date: Available online 6 August 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Li Sheng, Wanyang HuAbstractIn this paper a standard model is used to examine the economic effect of market structure in travel destinations. We show that favorable changes in the push and pull factors are good for enhancing local hospitality business to the extent that they stimulate external tourism demand. We also find that rising competition in the hospitality industry, albeit boosting its sales, has no effect on its revenue but can impact its profitability adversely due to resulting price drops that are desirable only to incom...

Bonding social capital and political trust: The mediating role of trust in public figures in Taiwan
This study not only assesses whether horizontal and vertical forms of BSC relate to political trust, but also analyzes how they influence political trust through trust in public figures after considering other theoretically crucial factors. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze data from a representative sample in Taiwan. The results reveal that horizontal BSC is negatively related to political trust, whereas citizens who have relatives and friends in political power have a high level of political trust. Trust in public figures mediates the association between two kinds of BSC and political confidence. This study...

Explaining the strictness of medical marijuana regulations in states
This study explains the strictness or extent of medical marijuana laws (MMLs) adopted by states from 1996 to 2013, developing hypotheses based on states’ economic conditions, political structures, user demands, criminal justice demands, and the impact of neighboring states. We develop an index score that captures state statute strictness by analyzing and coding the statutes of MMLs in each state. Our findings show (1) that factors that influence adoption of MMLs are not the same as the factors that influence the strictness of policies and (2) that the regulation of users and what they are allowed to have for medical mari...
