Cost efficiency performance of Indonesian banks over the recovery period: A stochastic frontier analysis
This study examines cost efficiency of Indonesian commercial banks during the period 2002–2010. The period testifies a recovery period post-Asian Financial Crisis 1997–1998 and post-bank restructuring and recapitalisation programme of 1997–2001. Stochastic frontier analysis is employed to estimate bank cost efficiency with the Battese-Coelli 1992 (BC92) and standard-pooled methods with the two-stage analysis. TOBIT regression is also used to reveal the determinants of Indonesian banks’ cost efficiency over the period. The findings of the study show that the average cost efficiency of Indonesian banks were likely to ...

Neighborhood activities and motherhood: Gendering the systemic model of community
Publication date: Available online 25 August 2018Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Elena Ariel WindsongAbstractKasarda and Janowitz’s (1974) systemic model emphasizes community as a system of kinship and friendship ties driven by on-going processes of socialization. The emphasis on socialization is particularly germane to gender, specifically parenting and motherhood, but little research has unpacked neighborhood activities and gender. Drawing on qualitative data from a neighborhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I demonstrate that motherhood was central to women’s participation in neighborhood activities, use ...

Winning awards and gaining recognition: An impact analysis of APSA section book prizes
This study has two objectives: to rank order the top ten publishers of all 609 “best book” awards by APSA sections from 1985 to 2016 and to show using multiple regression analysis which variables best explain why some award-winning volumes receive more scholarly citations than other books. Our dependent variable is average yearly citation counts from copyright date to 2017, and five independent variables were tested in the analysis: (1) prestige ranking of the publisher; (2) number of authors; (3) size of APSA section; (4) subfield specialization; and (5) gender (male or female authors). The top ten publishers account ...

Either I do or I must: An exploration of the marriage attitudes of Indonesian singles
This study thus aims to describe singles’ attitudes toward marriage through the interaction of three indicators: the intention to marry, the perceived social pressure to marry, and underlying reasons to marry. A survey of 107 never-married adults (Mage = 26.98 ± 5.79) was conducted which employed both open-ended and closed questions. Its findings confirm that, despite the considerable pressure singles experience due to their singleness, they still have a favourable attitude toward marriage. (Source: The Social Science Journal)

In the name of truth: People’s reactions to ingroup and outgroup members who self-disclose a severe error
Publication date: Available online 2 August 2018Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Marika Rullo, Sharon Monaco, Federico Giannini, Stefano Livi, Fabio PresaghiAbstractUsually people consider morality traits to be highly valuable, both in themselves and in others. Moreover, they tend to select moral groups and are often motivated to protect the positive identity of their groups by derogating immoral ingroup members. However, sometimes even moral ingroup members could represent a threat to the group and therefore be negatively evaluated, such as in the case of people who report another person’s wrongdoing (whistl...

Specifically, we test the hypothesis that the deregulation of interstate branch-banking restrictions had an effect on income inequality as measured by the Gini Coefficient and Thiel Index. We co...

In this study, we investigated the influence of the media factor on the effect of and resistance to media advocacy for organ donation by conducting a web-based experiment with a 2 (media: conservative vs. progressive) by 2 (political orientation: conservative vs. progressive) factorial design with media and political orientation as between-subjects factors. The results demonstrate that organ donation intention after exposure to a message advocating organ donation was greater for conservatives in the conservative media group than for those in the progressive media group. The effect of participant–media agreement in regard...
