The efficacy and safety of infliximab and calcineurin inhibitors in steroid-refractory UC patients: A meta-analysis
Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggested a better treatment response rate and lower risk of colectomy in the first, second and third year, with IFX, compared with CYS in steroid-refractory UC patients. There was no significant difference among IFX and calcineurin inhibitors in AE, SAE, and mortality. (Source: The Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology)

Obesity in inflammatory bowel disease: A review of its role in the pathogenesis, natural history, and treatment of IBD
Amanda M Johnson, Edward V LoftusSaudi Journal of Gastroenterology 2021 27(4):183-190 In contrast to previous perceptions that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are generally malnourished and underweight, there is mounting evidence to suggest that rates of obesity in IBD now mirror that of the general population. Clinical effects of ursodeoxycholic acid on patients with ulcerative colitis may improve via the regulation of IL-23-IL-17 axis and the changes of the proportion of intestinal microflora
Conclusion: Additional UDCA could provide better therapeutic effects than mesalazine alone, possibly due to the change of IL-23 and IL-17 and the proportional distribution of intestinal microflora. (Source: The Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology)

Short-term outcomes of stents in obstructive rectal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion: The use of rectal stents in obstructing rectal or recto-sigmoid tumors seems to be technically feasible. A high rate of technical success, however, does not always translate into clinical success. A considerable complication rate is associated with this approach. Randomized controlled trials are needed to compare the outcomes of rectal stent placement with those of surgery. (Source: The Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology)
