Perioperative immunotherapy in stage IB-III non-small cell lung cancer: a critical review of its rationale and considerations
Korean J Intern Med. 2023 Nov;38(6):787-796. doi: 10.3904/kjim.2023.345. Epub 2023 Nov 1.ABSTRACTLung cancer is a dismal disease as a leading cause of overall cancer death, but the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in driver gene mutation negative metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is changing the paradigm of lung cancer treatment. Recently, ICIs are expanding their treatment area to early-stage NSCLC and ICIs have also changed their treatment strategies of such patients. And it is important to appropriately select patients with resectable early-stage lung cancer through a multidisciplinary team...

Long-acting interferon: pioneering disease modification of myeloproliferative neoplasms
Korean J Intern Med. 2023 Nov;38(6):810-817. doi: 10.3904/kjim.2023.333. Epub 2023 Nov 1.ABSTRACTMyeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are clonal disorders of hematopoietic stem cells. The malignant clones produce cytokines that drive self-perpetuating inflammatory responses and tend to transform into more aggressive clones, leading to disease progression. The progression of MPNs follows a biological sequence from the early phases of malignancy, polycythemia vera, and essential thrombocythemia, to advanced myelofibrosis and leukemic transformation. To date, the treatment of MPNs has focused on preventing thrombosis by decrea...

Hepatic hemangioma: proportion and predictor of surgical treatment with emphasis on its growth rate
CONCLUSION: Approximately one in 300 patients with an HH underwent surgical treatment. Multiple HHs and a growth rate of more than 4.8%/year were indications for surgical treatment. Nearly half of the HHs showed growing pattern in our study.PMID:37939665 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.062 (Source: The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine)

Factors influencing occurrence of metachronous gastric cancer after endoscopic resection: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Gastric cancer patients with severe AG or presence of IM had a 2.0-fold or 7.0-fold higher risk of MGC occurrence after endoscopic resection than those without, respectively. They need more stringent follow-up to monitor MGC occurrences (CRD42023410940).PMID:37939666 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.184 (Source: The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine)

Identification of novel variants for complicating cardiac disease in the scrub typhus infection using whole genome sequencing
CONCLUSION: We suggest that the SNPs of SLC24A2 and ADARB2 might be genetic surrogate markers for complicating cardiac diseases in the scrub typhus infection. Our study show that early detection based on individual sequence variants might be feasible to predict complicating cardiac diseases in patients with scrub typhus infection, if further studies with more participants confirm these findings.PMID:37939667 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.221 (Source: The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine)

Exercise capacity and risk of incident atrial fibrillation in healthy adults
CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that poorer exercise capacity was associated with the development of AF in a healthy population. A prospective, systematic trial is necessary to confirm that appropriate exercise training will be beneficial in preventing the development of AF in such patients.PMID:37939668 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.075 (Source: The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine)

Association between knee osteoarthritis and mortality: a serial propensity score-matched cohort study
CONCLUSION: When propensity score matching controls metabolic risk factor imbalances, the association between symptomatic knee OA and higher CVD mortality was weaker compared to results of prior studies that used regression adjustment. The results may be more precise estimates of the total risk of knee OA for mortality in Koreans.PMID:37939669 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.222 (Source: The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine)
