Pre-treatment with proton pump inhibitors decreases the success of primary Helicobacter pylori eradication using a vonoprazan-based regimen
In conclusion, pre-treatment with PPIs before eradication therapy decreases the rate of successful eradication. Therefore, it may be desirable to discontinue pre-treatment with PPIs prior to eradication therapy, because of the potential to improve the rate of successful eradication. Metabolic syndrome and vaspin in patients with bipolar disorder
Publication date: Available online 24 April 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical SciencesAuthor(s): Hulya Ertekin, Basak Sahin, Ali Metehan Caliskan, Ikbal Inanli, Yusuf Haydar ErtekinAbstractMetabolic disorders and abnormal levels of circulating adipokines have been reported in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in the correlations of vaspin plasma levels and metabolic parameters between two groups: patients with BD and mentally healthy persons. We measured plasma levels of vaspin, metabolic parameters, and metabolic syndrome (MS) in 101 patients with BD a...

Neuroprotective effect of tanshinone IIA against neuropathic pain in diabetic rats through the Nrf2/ARE and NF-κB signaling pathways
Publication date: Available online 27 April 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical SciencesAuthor(s): Fa-Bo Feng, Hai-Yan QiuAbstractThe study aims to investigate whether tanshinone (TSN) IIA affects diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) via the Nrf2/AR and NF-κB signaling pathways. Rats were randomly assigned into DNP group, TSN group (injected with TSN IIA), TSN + DRB group (injected with TSN IIA and 15 mg/kg Nrf2/ARE inhibitors), TSN + PDTC group (injected with TSN IIA and 60 mg/kg NF-κB inhibitors) or control group. The first four groups were successfully established as DNP models after injection of streptozoto...

Effect of blood purification on serum miR-126 and VEGF levels in the process of atherosclerosis in uremic patients under maintenance hemodialysis
This study aims to study the influence of different blood purification approaches on the expression of miR-126 and VEGF serum levels in the development of atherosclerosis in uremic patients under maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). A total of 207 MHD patients with uremia were divided into HD (hemodialysis, n = 60), HDF (hemodiafiltration, n = 72), and HD + HP (hemodialysis + hemoperfusion, n = 75) groups based on different purification approaches. Eighty individuals who underwent physical examinations during the same period constituted the healthy controls. The serum levels of miR-126 and VEGF were examined by qRT-PC...

Ultrasound-guided intertumoral injection of contrast agents combined with human p53 gene for the treatment of breast cancer
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of ultrasound-guided injection of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) and the p53 gene on the treatment of rats with breast cancer (BC). Assembly of the p53 expression vector as well as that of a rat model with BC consisted of 200 successfully modeled rats randomly divided into 5 groups: p53 gene introduction, p53 gene introduction + ultrasound irradiation, p53 gene introduction + UCAs, p53 gene introduction + UCA + ultrasound irradiation, and UCA + ultrasound irradiation groups. Expression of p53 was detected via quantitative real-time polymerase chain rea...

Downregulated MALAT1 relates to recurrent pregnancy loss via sponging miRNAs
In conclusion, MALAT1 as a functional lncRNA controls cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion and modulates blood vessel formation. Down regulated MALAT1 induced disordered cross-talk between embryo and mother is one of the factor contributes to the pathogenesis of RPL. (Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences)

Mir-483 inhibits colon cancer cell proliferation and migration by targeting TRAF1
Publication date: Available online 24 May 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical SciencesAuthor(s): Zi-Yu Niu, Wen-Li Li, Da-Lei Jiang, Yan-Song Li, Xiang-Jun XieAbstractMicroRNAs are important regulators during human growth and development. Emerging evidence indicates that microRNAs play important roles in colorectal cancer. The aim of this study is to reveal the biological function and direct target gene of miR-483 in colorectal cancer. The biological function of miR-483 on the proliferation and migration of colon cancer cells was then examined by Edu assay and transwell assay, respectively. Our findings revealed t...

Impaired cutaneous T-cell attracting chemokine elevation and adipose-derived stromal cell migration in a high-glucose environment cause poor diabetic wound healing
In this study, we introduced adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) into wound sites and demonstrated that the local transplantation of ADSCs accelerated DM-related wound healing. Furthermore, the migration ability of ADSCs, which diminishes in a high-glucose environment, was partially restored by the exogenous replenishment of the cutaneous T-cell attracting chemokine (CTACK/CCL27). Our findings suggest that CTACK is a potential novel therapeutic target in DM-related wound healing. (Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences)

Ginsenoside improves papillary thyroid cancer cell malignancies partially through upregulating connexin 31
Publication date: June 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, Volume 34, Issue 6Author(s): Li Xu, Su-Wan Chen, Xiao-Yan Qi, Xin-Xin Li, Yuan-Bo SunAbstractConnexin 31 (Cx31) is considered a suppressor for many tumors. Ginsenoside (Rg1) is a traditional Chinese herb that is widely acknowledged due to its anti-tumor characteristics. However, limited studies have focused on the role of Rg1 in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) cells. In the current study, we found that the expression of Cx31 in thyroid cancer tissues and thyroid cancer cell lines was significantly lower than that in normal thyroid epithelial tissu...
