Recent review of transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect
Publication date: July 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, Volume 34, Issue 7Author(s): Ming-Chun Yang, Jiunn-Ren WuAbstractAtrial septal defect (ASD) is one of the two most common congenital heart diseases in children and adult. After the application of catheter intervention for ASD, this became an alternative treatment other than surgery from late 1990. In 2001, the procedure was further approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and become the first choice for most cases of secundum type of ASD worldwide. The success rate is more than 98% in literature reviews, with low complication rates ...

IGF-1 defends against chronic-stress induced depression in rat models of chronic unpredictable mild stress through the PI3K/Akt/FoxO3a pathway
This study aims to investigate the role of IGF-1 in chronic-stress induced depression through the PI3K/Akt/FoxO3a pathway. A rat model of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) was established. In total, 48 rats were randomized into control (normal rats), CUMS (CUMS modeled rats) and CUMS + IGF-1 (injection of IGF-1 before CUMS modeling) groups. Body weight, horizontal (number of horizontal crossing) and vertical activity (rearing times), and sucrose consumption were identified one day before and after the open-field test. The mRNA and protein expression of PI3K, Akt, FoxO3a and Bim in the hippocampus was measured by R...

MiR-217 is involved in the carcinogenesis of gastric cancer by down-regulating CDH1 expression
In conclusion, we constructed the negative correlation between miR-217 and CDH1 level in GC patients and cells; unveiled part of the miR-217 function during the pathogenesis of GC. These findings may give insight into understanding the mechanism of GC pathogenesis and provide new biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. (Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences)

Effects of perineural invasion in prostate needle biopsy on tumor grade and biochemical recurrence rates after radical prostatectomy
Publication date: July 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, Volume 34, Issue 7Author(s): Serdar Celik, Ozan Bozkurt, Omer Demir, Ozgur Gurboga, Burcin Tuna, Kutsal Yorukoglu, Guven AslanAbstractTo predict local invasive disease before retropubic radical prostatectomy (RRP), the correlation of perineural invasion (PNI) on prostate needle biopsy (PNB) and RRP pathology data and the effect of PNI on biochemical recurrence (BR) were researched. For patients with RRP performed between 2005 and 2014, predictive and pathologic prognostic factors were assessed. Initially all and D'Amico intermediate-risk group pa...

Fever and systemic inflammatory response syndrome after retrograde intrarenal surgery: Risk factors and predictive model
In conclusion, high stone burden, long surgical time, positive stone culture, high pre-operative CRP and the presence of diabetes mellitus was could increase the risk of fever or SIRS after RIRS for kidney stone. The constructed nomograms could help clinicians in evaluating the risk for post-operative infectious complications. (Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences)

Evaluation of the effects of glucose on osmolal gap using freezing point depression and vapor pressure methods
In this study, the possible effects of blood glucose on OG were investigated by freezing point depression and vapor pressure methods. The concentrations of sodium, glucose, blood urea nitrogen and osmolalities of 2640 samples were measured. There were two methods for calculating serum osmolality: freezing point depression method (n = 2399) and vapor pressure method (n = 241). The OG was positively associated with glucose in glucose 110–450 mg/dL (r = 0.191, p < 0.001) and glucose > 450 mg/dL (r = 0.372, p < 0.001), but not in glucose < 110 mg/dL (r = 0.017, p = 0.711) in freezing point ...

Simplified scoring system for prediction of mortality in acute suppurative cholangitis
Publication date: July 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, Volume 34, Issue 7Author(s): Barış Doğu Yıldız, Sabri Özden, Barış Saylam, Fahri Martlı, Mesut TezAbstractOur objective in this study was to identify the factors contributing to mortality in acute suppurative cholangitis which could be tested easily in every emergency clinic. This is a retrospective study enrolling 104 patients with acute suppurative cholangitis. Demographic and laboratory data were collected for analysis. In univariant analysis red cell distribution width, total bilirubin level, intensive care unit admission was identif...

ShRNA-mediated BMI-1 gene silencing inhibits gastrointestinal stromal tumor cell telomerase activity and enhances apoptosis
The objective of the present study is to evaluate the effect of BMI gene silencing on proliferation, apoptosis and telomerase activity in human GIST882 cells. GIST882 cells were transfected with a eukaryotic expression vector of an shRNA fragment. The silencing efficiency in the GIST882 cells was determined by RT-qPCR and a western blot analysis. After the shRNA-BMI-1 plasmid was transfected into the GIST882 cells and nude mice, a cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and flow cytometry were utilized to detect the GIST882 cell proliferation, the apoptosis rate and the cell cycle. Tumor growth was observed by tumor xenograf...
