Dual Mobility for Oncological Hip Reconstruction: Significantly Reduced Dislocation Rates at 5 years
CONCLUSIONS: DMs showed markedly lower rates of dislocation than conventional THAs, with overall revision rates remaining comparable among different designs. DMs should be considered the option of choice for oncological hip reconstruction if compared with conventional THAs. HAs are a feasible alternative when encountering femoral disease involvement only.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.PMID:38052029 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00608 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)

Barriers to Entry: Socioeconomic Discrepancies Between Unmatched First-Time Applicants and Reapplicants in the Field of Orthopaedic Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Reapplicants to orthopaedic surgery residency have less educational debt and are more likely to have parental figures in a healthcare field compared with first-time applicants. This suggests the discrepancies in socioeconomic status between reapplicants and first-time applicants and the importance of providing resources for reapplicants.PMID:38052032 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00536 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)

Differentiating Shoulder Pathology from Cervical Spine Pathology: An Algorithmic Approach
J Am Acad Orthop Surg. 2023 Nov 28. doi: 10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00210. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccurate and timely diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions is an essential component of high-quality orthopaedic care. The proximity of the shoulder to the cervical spine leads to a multitude of pathologic conditions whose clinical presentations overlap, posing a diagnostic challenge to orthopaedic providers. Missed or delayed diagnosis of the etiology for patient-described 'shoulder pain' causes frustration among patients, incurs increased healthcare costs, and delays treatment. Moreover, patients with concurrent conditions o...

Predictors of Failure to Achieve Planned Same-Day Discharge after Primary Total Joint Arthroplasty: a Multivariable Analysis of Perioperative Risk Factors
This study evaluated the association between 43 perioperative risk factors and SDD failure rates.METHODS: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from 466 primary TJAs with planned SDD to home was performed. Surgeries were performed at an academic tertiary care center comprising a hospital facility and a stand-alone ambulatory surgery center (ASC) on the same campus. Factors associated with failed SDD were identified using a multivariable analysis.RESULTS: Only one of 316 (0.3%) patients who underwent surgery in the ASC failed planned SDD (P < 0.001) compared with 33.3% of 150 patients who underwent sur...

A Framework for Studying Healthcare Equity in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Scoping Review and Meta-Analysis of Existing Literature
CONCLUSION: These studies provide insight into healthcare inequities in AIS, although notable inconsistencies make it difficult to aggregate data and draw the conclusions needed to drive necessary public health changes. However, our proposed framework can provide a guideline for future prospective and retrospective studies to standardize data reporting and allow for improved collaboration, study design, and future systematic reviews and meta-analyses.PMID:37994490 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00296 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
