High-energy Femoral Neck Fractures in Young Patients
J Am Acad Orthop Surg. 2024 Jan 18. doi: 10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00720. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFemoral neck fractures in physiologically young patients typically occur from high-energy axial loading forces through the thigh with the hip in an abducted position. These fractures have a high rate of associated head, chest, abdominal, and musculoskeletal injuries. High-energy hip fractures differ from traditional geriatric hip fractures regarding incidence, mechanism, management algorithms, and complications. After adequate resuscitation, goals of treatment include anatomic reduction and stable fixation while maintaining vas...

Life Expectancy After Treatment of Metastatic Bone Disease: An International Trend Analysis
DISCUSSION: Median duration of survival after treatment of MBD has increased, which was a consistent finding in nearly all cancer types. Longer survival is likely attributable to improvements in both medical and surgical treatments. As life expectancy for patients with MBD increases, surgical methods should be selected with this in mind.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: VI.PMID:38241634 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00332 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)

The Epidemiology of Posttraumatic Osteoarthritis of the Knee in the United States: An Analysis of 948,853 Patients From 2000 to 2022
DISCUSSION: These findings echo earlier, smaller scale studies but reveal an alarming rise in PTOAK prevalence, potentially doubling by 2030. The financial burden of knee OA treatment in the United States is already substantial, costing between $5.7 and $15 billion USD annually. This projected increase in prevalence could further increase healthcare expenditures by $1 to 3 billion by 2030. These results emphasize the need for additional research into factors contributing to PTOAK, evidence-based preventive public health interventions, and the development of multidisciplinary system-based care delivery optimization pathways...

Evaluating Funding for Authors Achieving High Citations vs. Online Popularity
DISCUSSION: These findings reject our hypothesis: no notable differences for industry payments and NIH funding between authors for top Altmetric and citation studies. Authors receiving funding from industry versus the NIH are generally two distinct groups, but there is a small group supported by both. These studies achieve both critical acclaim (citations) and online popularity (Altmetric scores).DATA AVAILABILITY: Data can be available on reasonable request.PMID:38236923 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00325 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)

Equitable Integration of Patient-Reported Outcomes Into Clinical Practice-Opportunities, Challenges, and a Roadmap for Implementation
J Am Acad Orthop Surg. 2024 Jan 9. doi: 10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00798. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) provide a standardized assessment from the patient about their own health status. Although originally developed as research tools, PROMs can be used in clinical care to complement objective functional measures (eg, range of motion) and are increasingly integrated to guide treatment decisions and predict outcomes. In some situations, when PROMs are used during clinical care they can improve patient mortality, outcomes, engagement, well-being, and patient-physician communication. Guidance ...
