The Relationships of Dentition, Use of Dental Prothesis and Oral Health Problems with Frailty, Disability and Diet Quality: Results from Population-Based Studies of Older Adults from the UK and USA
ConclusionOlder adults with impaired dentition even who use dentures who experience self-report oral problems related to eating may be at increased risk of frailty and disability. Further research is needed to establish whether improving oral problems could potentially reduce the occurrence of frailty and disability. (Source: The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging)

HOMEFOOD Randomised Trial –Six-Month Nutrition Therapy in Discharged Older Adults Reduces Hospital Readmissions and Length of Stay at Hospital Up to 18 Months of Follow-Up
ConclusionA six-month nutrition therapy in older Icelandic adults discharged from hospital reduced hospital readmissions and shortens LOS at the hospital up to 18-months post-discharge. However, it did neither affect mortality, ER, nor need of long-term care residence in this group. (Source: The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging)

Association between Frailty Assessed Using Two Electronic Medical Record-Based Frailty Assessment Tools and Long-Term Adverse Prognosis in Older Critically Ill Survivors
ConclusionBoth the HFRS and FI-lab could independently predict 1-year mortality in older critically ill survivors. Adding the HFRS to the SOFA score model improved it more than adding the FI-lab. The greatest improvement was achieved when both frailty indicators were used together. These findings suggest that electronic medical record-based frailty assessment methods can be useful tools for predicting long-term outcomes in older critically ill patients. Associations between Sedentary Duration and Cognitive Function in Older Adults: A Longitudinal Study with 2-Year Follow-Up
ConclusionVariations in the impact of diverse sedentary behaviors on the cognitive function were detected in Chinese older adults. However, such associations were cross-sectional and longitudinal associations were not found in the current study. (Source: The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging)

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Burden, Cognitive Impairments and Incident Dementia among Community-Dwelling Middle-Aged and Older Adults: An 8-Year Longitudinal Follow-up Study
ConclusionsAmong healthy, community-dwelling, middle-aged and older adults, those with moderate-to-high cardiovascular risk burden were significantly associated with incident dementia and global and domain-specific cognitive impairments (verbal memory and language), which suggests the existence of a relationship between early cognitive deficits and CVD risk burden. Further studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanism of the link between CVD risk burden and cognitive impairment. (Source: The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging)

Longitudinal Relationship between Mobility Device Use, Falls and Fear of Falling (FOF) Differed by Frailty Status among Community-Dwelling Older Adults
ConclusionThe number of mobility devices used and the only use of canes were associated with fall-related outcomes among robust and pre-frail individuals. Further research is needed to develop targeted strategies for preventing falls and FOF among older adults with mobility device use, particularly for those in the early stages of frailty.
