Artemisinin-based combination therapy successfully treated two hyperparasitaemic Plasmodium falciparum cases
Hyperparasitaemia is an important event in the cascade ofPlasmodium falciparum severe malaria (SM), and may also lead to SM associated complications and death, if left untreated. Here, we report two hyperparasitaemic patients with no life-threatening complications. Malaria diagnosis was performed using thick and thin blood smears and immunochromatographic-based rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) purchased from three different manufacturers. Parasitaemia was calculated following the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Haematological and biochemical investigations were also performed. Weekly follow-up of blood smear exami...

Necrotizing fasciitis – a complication of autoimmune skin blistering diseases?
Conclusions: Due to its unspecific clinical picture, necrotizing fasciitis itself presents a frequently misdiagnosed soft tissue infection. Altered laboratory parameters in immunosuppressed patients often lead to misdiagnosing of NF and loss of precious time, which plays a major role in survival. Given the manifestation of AIBD as loss of skin integrity and immunosuppressive therapy, these patients could be more predisposed to NF than the general population. Burden of pulmonary tuberculosis and challenges related to tuberculosis detection in Ethiopia
Early and rapid diagnosis ofMycobacterium tuberculosisin clinical specimen is important for the treatment of patients and control of disease transmission to the community. The disease is largely preventable and curable, but without rapid, and correct diagnostic tools for tuberculosis (TB) infection and drug resistance, it is unlikely that we can meet the national TB elimination program in Ethiopia by 2035. Moreover, drug resistant TB is becoming more common and is a great challenge for the successful control and eradication of TB. The need for rapid, accurate and affordable methods for TB management should be considered by...

Performance of five serological tests in the diagnosis of visceral and cryptic leishmaniasis: a comparative study
Conclusions: The data obtained with TruQuick ® supports its application in the rapid diagnosis of leishmaniasis in endemic areas, a feature not shown by IFAT despite its high diagnostic performance. Regarding the diagnosis of asymptomatic leishmaniasis, the best results were obtained with WB LDBio®, confirming previous studies. (Source: The Journal of Infection in Developing Countries)
