Local and Systemic Nail Plate Abnormalities: A Clinical Review
Nail disorders are often difficult to recognize and diagnose because of the subtlety of their presentation and their shared overlapping features that are common to several conditions. Experientially, this is further complicated by the fact that specific training on diagnosis of nail pathologies varies substantially across most residency programs and for a majority of medical and surgical specialties. To distinguish these presentations from true, potentially deleterious nail disorders, clinicians should have familiarity with the most commonly occurring nail pathologies and their associations, and use a systematic approach w...

Posttraumatic Osteoarthritis of the Distal Interphalangeal Joint: A Follow-Up Study of 12 Years After Nonsurgical Treatment of Mallet Finger Fractures
In treatment of mallet finger fractures (MFFs), the aim is to minimize residual extension lag, reduce subluxation, and restore congruency of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. Failure to do so may increase the risk of secondary osteoarthritis (OA). However, long-term follow-up studies focusing on OA of the DIP joint after an MFF are scarce. The purpose of this study was to assess OA, functional outcomes, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after an MFF. (Source: The Journal of Hand Surgery)

Re-evaluation of the Indications for the Camitz Procedure in Severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This study compared the functional recovery of thumb opposition following carpal tunnel release with and without a concomitant Camitz procedure. We used the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Instrument questionnaire (CTSI) and the compound muscle action potential of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB-CMAP) to assess the recovery. Necrotic Upper-Extremity Infections in People Who Inject Drugs: A Case Series
Our institution has noted an increase in severe upper-extremity infections within the last 2 years. These patients have required transhumeral amputation. This case series demonstrates some of the catastrophic outcomes of these infections in people who inject drugs, which has been postulated to be related to the addition of xylazine to injectable drugs in our community. Study Design and Analysis in Hand Surgery Research: Tips for Success
Hand surgeons are constantly faced with evaluation of new evidence to identify best practices in clinical care. However, even the most rigorous study designs have limitations due to biases, generalizability, and other flaws. Here, we highlight seven common aspects of study design and analysis that should be considered by hand surgeons when interpreting findings. The evaluation of these practices can optimize the peer-review process and assess the value of evidence to be incorporated into clinical practice. (Source: The Journal of Hand Surgery)

Patient-Perceived Outcomes of Recovery After Trigger Digit Release
Trigger finger release (TFR) is one of the most commonly performed hand surgeries; nevertheless, the time until patients subjectively feel recovered has not been well documented. The limited literature on patient perceptions of recovery after any type of surgery has described that patients and surgeons may have differing views on the time until full recovery. Our primary study question was to determine how long it takes for patients to subjectively feel fully recovered after TFR. (Source: The Journal of Hand Surgery)

Retraction
The article by Timmer et  al in the February 2023 issue of The Journal of Hand Surgery (“Can a Blade-Stopping Mechanism on Circular Table Saws Reduce the Severity of Hand Injuries in Contact Scenarios? A Cadaveric Study”, Vol. 48, No. 2, p. 141-148) has been retracted. After online publication, communication between t he authors and a reader resulted in some further investigation by the authors. The additional data collected by the authors suggested that the reported findings are not accurate. The authors found the data published in Table 1 were invalidated by an incorrect model.
