Rethinking Complications in Hand Surgery
One of us read the article of our colleagues and collaborators1 and had some questions about the classification of events or outcomes as complications and reached out for a dialog. What ensued was a fruitful consideration of how adverse events are defined and classified. (Source: The Journal of Hand Surgery)

Reliability and Validity of the Hook Test for Diagnosis of Distal Biceps Tendon Ruptures
Although the initial description of the distal biceps tendon (DBT) hook test (HT) reported 100% sensitivity (Sn) and specificity (Sp), subsequent retrospective series have demonstrated imperfect validity. The purpose of this investigation was to prospectively assess the validity and reliability of the HT for complete DBT ruptures. We aimed to determine the Sn/Sp and interrater reliability for the HT. Evaluating Male Patients ’ Understanding of Osteoporosis Evaluation and Treatment Following a Distal Radius Fracture
Current estimates suggest that 1 –2 million men in the United States have osteoporosis, yet the majority of osteoporosis literature focuses on postmenopausal women. Our aim was to understand men’s awareness and knowledge of osteoporosis and its treatment. (Source: The Journal of Hand Surgery)

Private Equity: An Emerging Practice Model
Private equity acquisitions are increasing among orthopedic practices. The concepts and vocabulary surrounding these deals may be foreign to physicians. There are both potential risks and potential benefits to physicians at the center of these complex deals, and a clear understanding of any proposed private equity acquisition is crucial. Short-term data on private equity acquisition in other procedure-based outpatient specialties have shown that private equity ownership consistently increased the number of patients seen per provider, allowed amount per claim, and utilization of advanced practice practitioners. Vascularized Bone Grafting Versus the 2-Stage Masquelet Technique for Upper-Extremity Bone Reconstruction: A  Meta-Analysis
Vascularized bone grafting (VBG) has been described as the technique of choice for larger bone defects in bone reconstruction, yielding excellent results at the traditional threshold of 6 cm as described in the literature. However, we hypothesize that the 2-stage Masquelet technique provides equivalent union rates for upper-extremity bone defects regardless of size, while having no increase in the rate of patient complications. The Effect of Proximal Row Carpectomy and Trapeziectomy on First Ray Stability: A Cadaveric Study
Wrist and thumb pathology can coexist leading to potential indications for proximal row carpectomy (PRC) and trapeziectomy. In this setting, the axial stability of the first ray is not known. We sought to evaluate axial subsidence of the first metacarpal in cadavers following trapeziectomy and trapeziectomy with PRC to determine the mechanical effects of the procedures performed concurrently. A Multicenter Prospective Randomized Comparison of Conduits Versus Decellularized Nerve Allograft for Digital Nerve Repairs
While there are advantages and disadvantages to both processed nerve allografts (PNA) and conduits, a large, well-controlled prospective study is needed to compare the efficacy and to delineate how each of these repair tools can be best applied to digital nerve injuries. We hypothesized that PNA digital nerve repairs would achieve superior functional recovery for longer length gaps compared with conduit-based repairs. (Source: The Journal of Hand Surgery)
