The Pattern of Change in Depressive Symptoms and Inflammatory Markers After Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Systematic Review
Depression is a major mental health disorder, and its pathophysiology is still largely unknown, as is the action mechanism of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Some evidence suggests that inflammation might play a role in depression, and several studies have attempted to demonstrate a link between ECT and cytokines. This systematic review used a qualitative analysis to assess the effect of ECT on inflammatory markers as it relates to the clinical response of depressive symptoms in major depressive disorders. The bibliographic search engines CINAHL, Embase, PsychInfo, and PubMed were used to identify articles published up to...

A Randomized, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Study of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation as an Augmentation Intervention for the Attenuation of Motor Deficits in Patients With Stroke
Conclusions An intensive course of tDCS, as delivered in this study, does not improve motor, mood, and cognitive outcomes in ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke in patients undergoing individualized rehabilitation. The study provides important leads for directions for future research. (Source: The Journal of ECT)

Cross-cultural Comparison of Perceptions and Knowledge About Electroconvulsive Therapy Among Adults Who Screened Positive for Depression in the United States, India, and China
Conclusions Greater public education is needed about ECT, particularly in the United States. Misperceptions and lack of knowledge may hinder utilization of ECT in India, China, and the United States. (Source: The Journal of ECT)

Electroconvulsive Therapy Use in Psychiatric Hospitalizations in Portugal: A Nationwide Descriptive Study
Conclusions In Portugal, most of the patients who received ECT were women above middle age, and depressive disorders were the most common indication. Portugal's iP% represents a low rate when compared with other European countries, which might indicate an underutilization of ECT in Portuguese psychiatric hospitals. (Source: The Journal of ECT)

Association Between Anterior Cingulate Cortex Neurochemical Profile and Clinical Remission After Electroconvulsive Treatment in Major Depressive Disorder: A Longitudinal: 1: H Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study
Conclusions Results suggested that Glx levels could be a predictor of remission. Studies with larger samples should explore neurochemical correlates of ECT in unipolar MDD. (Source: The Journal of ECT)

The Effects of Focal Electrically Administered Seizure Therapy Compared With Ultrabrief Pulse Right Unilateral Electroconvulsive Therapy on Suicidal Ideation: A 2-Site Clinical Trial
Conclusions Although limited by the open-label, nonrandomized design, FEAST showed comparable effects on suicidal ideation when compared with routine use of UB-RUL ECT. These results are encouraging and support the need for further research and a noninferiority trial. (Source: The Journal of ECT)

Long-Term Risk of Developing Dementia After Electroconvulsive Therapy for Affective Disorders
Conclusions The ECT treatment of affective disorders was not associated with an increased long-term risk of developing dementia compared with in-patients with affective disorders not treated with ECT. (Source: The Journal of ECT)

Duration of Electroconvulsive Therapy Postictal Burst Suppression Is Associated With Time to Reorientation
Conclusions The association between the duration of postictal burst suppression and reorientation time after ECT in this sample suggests that (not only the efficacy but also the) cognitive adverse effects of ECT might be related to the extent of postictal central inhibition after the termination of the seizure. A Retrospective Study of Patients Undergoing Acute Electroconvulsive Therapy for Predominately Manic or Mixed Episodes With and Without Lithium in Singapore
Conclusions Concurrent lithium administration during the initial acute ECT course was not associated with differential cognitive or symptomatic outcomes. Lithium administration should not be a contraindication for appropriate acute ECT treatment in patients. Larger controlled studies to confirm these findings are warranted. Discontinuation of Continuation or Maintenance Electroconvulsive Therapy Caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Naturalistic Study Investigating Relapse in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder
Conclusions Our results confirm earlier prospective and retrospective data regarding the efficacy and importance of C/M-ECT as relapse prevention. After treatment discontinuation, close monitoring of early warning signs for relapse is crucial, especially in the first few months. With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing, our data provide an indication of the necessity to ensure adequate care and access to ECT not only for the acutely ill but also for the vulnerable patients who are depending on C/M-ECT.
