Similar Efficacy and Lower Cost Associated with Ceftazidime Compared to Tobramycin Coupled with Vancomycin in Antibiotic Spacers in the Treatment of Periprosthetic Joint Infection
Vancomycin and tobramycin have traditionally been used in antibiotic spacers. In 2020, our institution replaced tobramycin with ceftazidime. We hypothesized that the use of ceftazidime/vancomycin (CV) in antibiotic spacers would not lead to an increase in treatment failure compared to tobramycin/vancomycin (TV). Clinical Outcomes of Isolated Polyethylene Exchange versus Full Component Revision for the Management of Instability Following Total Knee Arthroplasty
Instability following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common cause for revision. Isolated polyethylene exchange (IPE) can be performed to increase knee joint stability, but results have been mixed. The purpose of this study was to compare the survivorship and patient-reported outcomes of patients undergoing revision TKA for instability with IPE versus full component revision. Innovative Hip Distraction Approaches for Total Hip Arthroplasty in Crowe IV Developmental Dysplasia or Similar High-Riding Patients
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) for dislocated hips (Crowe IV dysplasia) presents unique challenges. Conventional approaches involve subtrochanteric osteotomies, but are complex with additional fixation and potentially lead to limb-length discrepancies, nerve palsies, and other complications. An alternative strategy is a staged approach, where the femoral head (or remnant) is gradually lowered (distraction technique) to align with the true acetabulum over a period of time, followed by a second-stage anatomically acetabular-positioned THA. Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty: Does Age Affect Survivorship and Outcomes?
Despite the growing popularity of cementless total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in younger patients, the outcomes are unclear in the elderly population. We aimed to compare the clinical outcomes and survivorship of cementless TKA between different age groups. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

Appropriateness of Frequently Asked Patient Questions Following Total Hip Arthroplasty From ChatGPT Compared to Arthroplasty-Trained Nurses
The use of ChatGPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer), which is a natural language artificial intelligence model, has gained unparalleled attention with the accumulation of over 100 million users within months of launching. As such, we aimed to compare: 1) orthopaedic surgeons ’ evaluation of the appropriateness of the answers to the most frequently asked patient questions after total hip arthroplasty (THA); and 2) patients’ evaluation of ChatGPT and arthroplasty-trained nurses responses to answer their postoperative questions. Secondary Patellar Resurfacing Following Primary Unresurfaced Total Knee Arthroplasty: Beware of the Incidence of Late Patellar Erosion
The primary aim of this study was to evaluate secondary patellar resurfacing (SPR) indications and rates in a single surgeon series utilizing a modern TKA design and additionally, to review the functional outcomes of patients after undergoing SPR. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

A Nationwide Analysis of the Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Complications and Healthcare Utilizations After Total Knee Arthroplasty Using the Area Deprivation Index: Consideration of the Disadvantaged Patient
Socioeconomic status (SES) has been demonstrated to be an important prognostic risk factor among patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty. We evaluated patients living near neighborhoods with higher socioeconomic risk undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and if they were associated with differences in: 1) medical complications; 2) emergency department (ED) utilizations; 3) readmissions; and 4) costs of care. Effects of Dexamethasone on Postoperative Glycemic Control in Patients After Primary Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Trial
In patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA), the use of dexamethasone (DEX) may cause perioperative blood glucose (BG) disorders, leading to complications even in patients who do not have diabetes. We aimed to evaluate the effects of different DEX doses on perioperative BG levels. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

Efficacy of Intrawound Vancomycin in Prevention of Periprosthetic Joint Infection After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Prospective Double-Blinded Randomized Control Trial
Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a devastating complication. Intrawound vancomycin powder has been shown to reduce infection rates in spine surgery, but its role in arthroplasty remains controversial. This prospective randomized control trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intrawound vancomycin in preventing PJI after primary TKA. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

Characterization of the Relative Change in Objective and Subjective Metrics by Baselining Patients Who have Wearable Technology Prior to Total Knee Arthroplasty
Wearable sensors and associated supporting technologies (i.e., patient applications) can provide both objective (joint position, step counts, etc.) and subjective data (i.e., pain scores and patient-reported outcome measures) to track a patient ’s episode of care. Establishing a subjective and objective baseline of a patient’s experience may arguably be beneficial for multiple reasons, including setting recovery expectations for the patient and demonstrating the effectiveness or success of the intervention.
