Current Clinical Practices of Saudi Physiotherapists in Stroke Rehabilitation
This article uses an existing American survey to compare Saudi physiotherapists' current practice and preferred interventions in stroke rehabilitation with their counterparts in other countries. Method: An electronic survey was sent between September and October 2020 to physiotherapists (n = 287) treating persons with stroke in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire consisted of items related to stroke rehabilitation, including treatment approach, the goal of interventions, management of tone, facilitation of movement, function, and improved motor control. Chi-square tests (χ2) were used to test any associations between p...

Evaluating the Benefits of Early Intensive Rehabilitation for Patients With Sepsis in the Medical Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Study
Purpose: To evaluate the benefits of early rehabilitation intervention for patients with sepsis in a medical intensive care unit (MICU) and to identify the factors associated with positive outcomes at discharge. Methods: A retrospective review of 97 electronic medical records of patients with sepsis admitted to 2 similar-sized MICU pods of an urban tertiary care hospital was conducted. Bivariate analyses were conducted to compare the sociodemographics, length of stay, mobility level, and discharge disposition of 47 patients who received early rehabilitation intervention in MICU pod 1, with 46 patients who receiv...

An Explanatory Model for the Relationship Between Physical Therapists' Self-perceptions of Value and Care Prioritization Decisions in the Acute Hospital
Conclusions: In addition to the perceived value of physical therapy for individual patients, acute hospital physical therapists integrate organization-level factors into prioritization decisions. Future research should seek to understand how this may influence practice variation and identify practice patterns that simultaneously optimize outcomes considered important by both patients and organizations. Missed Physical Therapy Treatments in the Acute Hospital: Toward a More Complete Understanding
Conclusions: The positive effect of physical therapy is minimized when scheduled treatment does not occur. Lower nontreatment is associated with more trait openness. Attributes related to openness (eg, inquisitiveness and problem-solving) should be cultivated. More research is needed to understand nontreatment and guide therapists in hospital patient care. Acute Care Physical Therapy Practice Analysis Identifies the Need for a Core Outcome Measurement Set
Conclusion: Most physical therapists participating in this study of practice in acute care reported using OMs in their daily practice. This survey confirms the desire to develop a core OM set with high clinical utility for use in acute care settings. (Source: The Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy)

Rehabilitation Outcomes for Patients With Severe Presentation of COVID-19: A Case Series
Conclusion: The patients made clinically meaningful improvements in each outcome measure during their length of stay for inpatient rehabilitation. This reveals the positive rehabilitation potential of 2 older adult patients with COVID-19 and demonstrates the patients' ability to maintain inpatient rehabilitation facility level of activity. With individualized care and discharge planning, similar patients may make significant gains in function despite advanced age and comorbid conditions. Frailty in Acute Care: Not Just Your Grandparents' Medical Condition
Discussion: Frailty is a multidimentional clinical diagnosis that is not reserved solely to those older than 65 years. Many diagnoses have been closely linked to frailty. Clinicians across the spectrum need to recognize and assess for frailty, especially in acute care, as discharge planning is a key component in reducing readmissions. Creating and adapting a treatment plan that meets all the necessary domains of fitness, combined with the appropriate intensity and duration, will provide the greatest chance of reversing patients along the continuum from frail to prefrail to nonfrail.
