Utilization of Forearm Crutches to Avoid Lymphedema After Breast Cancer Lymph Node Surgery: A Case Report
Discussion: Prolonged rigorous UE use by ambulating non-weight-bearing with forearm crutches within 1 to 2 months of treatment for breast cancer did not result in UE lymphedema. This case report reinforces the growing body of evidence that avoiding aggressive UE activity may not be necessary in those at low risk of lymphedema and informs assistive device prescription for patients with breast cancer. Acute Care Rehabilitation Following Upper and Lower Extremity Free Flap Surgery: A Review of Best Practices and Case Reports
Conclusion: There is no “gold standard” when treating a patient after flap surgery. As therapists, after a bed rest order is lifted, we initiate mobilizing a patient. Therefore, we may be present when a flap is at risk for compromise. As such, therapists should become familiar with the surgeon's protocol at their facility and understand how to appropriately progress patients. Additionally, a therapist should comprehend ways to assess a flap and familiarize themselves with principles of flap management. (Source: The Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy)

Acceptability of Physiotherapists in the Emergency Department for the Care of Adults With Musculoskeletal Disorders: An Exploratory Survey of Patient' Perspective
Conclusions: Within this exploratory survey, participants were favorable to ED APP for the care of MSKD, suggesting that implementation of such models would be accepted by patients with MSKD presenting to an ED. (Source: The Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy)

FSS-ICU Scores at ICU Discharge Differ Across Postacute Care Dispositions
Purpose: To determine whether Functional Status Score for the Intensive Care Unit (FSS-ICU) scores acquired within 24 hours of medical-surgical intensive care unit (MSICU) discharge differ among postacute care discharge dispositions in a nonsurgical patient population. Methods: A retrospective medical record review for data collection was conducted over 12 months for patients in an MSICU. FSS-ICU scores were collected within 24 hours of MSICU discharge. Subjects were categorized into 4 postacute care discharge dispositions: home, subacute rehabilitation (SAR), inpatient rehabilitation (IP), or other. A 1-way ana...

Physical Therapy and Discharge Disposition Following Acute Hospitalization for UTI in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Conclusions: Reduced frequency of physical therapist intervention for older adults hospitalized with UTI was associated with discharge to rehabilitation in a skilled nursing facility compared with those of similar age with increased PT intervention frequency. Maximizing Effectiveness of Examination of Patients With Acute Dizziness in the Emergency Department
Physical therapists practicing on hospital units or in emergency departments must be prepared to do more than simply treat vestibular disorders diagnosed by other providers; we need to help care teams identify the source of a dizzy patient's complaints. Because the consequences of delayed or erroneous diagnosis may be catastrophic for the dizzy patient, the evaluating therapist's responsibility is to minimize the likelihood of inaccuracy in the diagnostic process. Practice standards, which involve both examination techniques and reasoning frameworks, are not widely used. Therapists who apply these standards can reduce diag...

The Utility of Mayo Clinic's Early Screen for Discharge Planning (ESDP) Tool: A Critical Narrative Review
Conclusion: Five of the 7 included studies were of good quality and, together, studies provided evidence that the ESDP tool correctly identifies adults requiring referral to SHDCPS. However, further research of the ESDP tool is recommended to account for variations observed in special populations and expand knowledge of its utility to predict outcomes such as hospital LOS, readmission risk, and discharge destination. Strengthening the Acute Care Curriculum: The Effect on Physical Therapy Students Over a Decade
Conclusions: Curricular changes devised to enhance acute care physical therapy training in a program's DPT curriculum may have led to graduates reporting increased competency in the unique skill set needed to work in this setting. DPT programs require the continued assessment of educational requirements and competencies to fulfill the growing need for physical therapists in the acute care setting. Active Rehabilitation in a Patient During and After Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation With a Diagnosis of COVID-19: A Case Report
Conclusion: This case study demonstrates the clinical decision-making used to provide physical therapy services for a critically ill patient with COVID-19. High-level team coordination resulted in limiting the use of PPE as well as reducing staff exposure frequency during rehabilitation. Despite his severe critical illness, the patient was successfully discharged home within 30 days. (Source: The Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy)

Patient Characteristics and Acute PT and OT Utilization During the Initial Surge of COVID-19: A Retrospective Observational Study
Conclusions: Patients acutely ill with COVID-19 hospitalized with the virus during the first 6 weeks of the pandemic remained in the intensive care unit and hospital longer than their counterparts without COVID-19 and had a delay in initiation of PT and OT intervention. PT and OT are important members of the care team for patients with the novel coronavirus. Understanding the descriptive characteristics of patients and therapy services during the initial surge could help improve utilization and patient outcomes.
