Expanding Buprenorphine Access: Outcomes of a Curricula With Opioid-Related Content
A priority for addressing the opioid crisis is the expansion of the nurse practitioner (NP) workforce. A Mid-Atlantic school of nursing revised their Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) curricula to augment the federally required 24 hours of specialized training with the goal of increasing the number of NPs eligible to prescribe buprenorphine. On the basis of a survey of those NP alumni, 17% reported they were prescribing buprenorphine. Continuing to provide opioid-related content and clinical opportunities for NP students is essential for increasing their knowledge and skills in providing evidence-based and nonjudgmental, no...

Diabetes Educational Intervention for Nurse Practitioner Students Within a Family Practice Clinic
Diabetes mellitus (DM) prevalence is rising. Nurse practitioner (NP) students must enter practice ready to implement current treatment guidelines in practice. This quality improvement project aimed to increase NP students ’ knowledge and confidence for managing patients with DM by implementing an educational intervention. The intervention entailed 6 educational sessions led by a preceptor during morning huddles in a primary care clinic. Outcomes were measured by comparing pre- and postintervention survey item means . The Heart of Cardiovascular Disease in Women
Heart disease is the leading cause of death (LCOD) for both men and women in the United States and kills approximately 1 in every 4 women.1 Despite widespread dissemination of staggering statistics, focused interventions, and national advocacy campaigns promoting cardiovascular disease (CVD) awareness, it is reported that only 45% to 56% of women identify CVD as the LCOD.2 Also troubling is the downward trend of women identifying CVD as the LCOD as reported in the 2019 American Heart Association survey in which the percent dropped from 64.8% in 2009 to only 43.7% in 2019. Weight Loss Is Unaffected by Government-Recommended Versus Below-Recommended Exercise Amounts Completed Within a Self-Regulation –Focused Obesity Treatment in Women
Maintaining exercise in adults with obesity is challenging. Recommendations typically range from ≥150 minutes/week (≥5 moderate-intensity 30-minute sessions/week) to nearly double that amount. However, the value of exercise for weight loss might largely come from its psychological-improvement attributes rather than energy-expenditure attributes. Women participants (N = 73) of a community-b ased obesity program supporting self-regulation and exercise were evaluated for 6 months. Completing 3 to 4 sessions/week was associated with as much lost weight as completion of 5 to 7 sessions/week (mean overall = −5.80 kg; â...

Nurse Practitioner Education Updates: A Cheat Sheet for the Practicing Nurse Practitioner
As a nurse practitioner (NP) educator, my day-to-day role is primarily teaching or administrative tasks in a family NP program. Additionally, I actively practice, serve on various nursing-related committees, and attempt to disseminate timely information to various audiences related to nursing, education, and practice. With this experience, I gain insight on the peaks and valleys of each of these areas. I am able to collaborate with colleagues from various aspects of nursing who share their perspectives on a common topic. (Source: The Journal for Nurse Practitioners)

A Journey Through My First Year as an APRN
Picture it. You just graduated. Congratulations and enjoy the day! This is your day! You have worked hours upon hours to reach this moment! You have planned and organized minutes within days, days within weeks, and weeks within months, and here you are. Dinner out with friends and family to celebrate your achievement (and their support and help) includes high fives, hugs, smiles, and well wishes, everything you would expect from a very, very joyous occasion. Afterward, you take a week off to get your bearings and somewhat recover from the shock of the fact that you just graduated from your program. (Source: The Journal for...

Leg and Back Pain After a Fall in the Middle of the Night
We present a case report of a 67-year-old female with multiple comorbid conditions who presented to the emergency department with left lower extremity and back pain after falling out of bed. She was noted to have a pulseless left lower extremity with decreased sensation. Diagnostic imaging was significant for a vascular emergency. This case highlights a serious and potentially fatal etiology of unilateral lower extremity pain. (Source: The Journal for Nurse Practitioners)

Development of an Advanced Practice Conceptual Model
All professional disciplines have a body of knowledge consisting of theories, research, and methods of inquiry related to practice. However, a theory specifically for the advanced practice provider (APP) has not been developed. Delineating the professional goals and scope of the APP is possible through a conceptual model. To serve a gap in existing literature, a conceptual model for the phenomenon of APP practice is proposed. The elements within the APP conceptual model are described, including the relationships surrounding clinical care, education, and professional development. Don ’t Get Sent for Cupcakes
Recently, I attended a session on career tips and leadership development for early and midcareer professionals at an interdisciplinary conference. This session was embedded in an afternoon dedicated to women in academia. Panelists emphasized the importance of carving out a niche for yourself in relation to scholarly activities, volunteering for projects that align with your expertise and special talents, and delivering what you commit to in a timely manner. Panelists also discussed avoiding being assigned grunt work that can be delegated to ancillary staff. (Source: The Journal for Nurse Practitioners)
