Delayed sternal < em > Mycobacterium tuberculosis < /em > infection after left ventricular assist device implantation: A case report
We present a case involving a 38-year-old male who experienced a delayed sternal Mtb infection following left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. More than 5 months post-surgery, the patient was readmitted to the hospital presenting a subxiphoid abscess. The incision site displayed an unsatisfactory healing process after the incision and drainage of the abscess. Despite engaging in a rigorous treatment protocol, which included anti-infective therapy, vacuum-assisted closure, and surgical debridement, the patient's wound remained unhealed. Ultimately, after pus gene sequencing confirmed the diagnosis, the patient...

Biomechanical analysis of cervical spine (C2-C7) at different flexed postures
The objective of this study is to make predictions regarding the intervertebral disc (IVD) stress values across C2-C7 IVD, the ligament stress, and the variation at 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60° of cervical neck angle using finite element analysis (FEA). In order to evaluate the mechanical properties of the cervical spine (particularly, C2-C7), this investigation makes use of computed tomography (CT) scans to develop a three-dimensional FEA model of the cervical spine. A preload of 50 N compression force was applied at the apex of the C2 vertebra, and all degrees of freedom below the C7 level were constrained. The primar...

Platelet volume indices and von Willebrand factor levels in blood exposed to polymer- or heparin-coated membrane oxygenators
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that P-LCR is a good index for platelet activation in blood-circulating ECC and that VWFA and VWFQ are significantly attenuated in blood-circulating ECC with ACP-coated membranes, indicating the advantage of IHP coating regarding platelet activation.PMID:38326931 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231223360 (Source: The International Journal of Artificial Organs)

Sex-specific differences in a large cohort of Brazilian incident dialysis patients over 12  years: A retrospective study
CONCLUSION: We consistently observed a higher prevalence of men on dialysis and differences in demographic, clinical, and dialysis characteristics. The underlying reasons for these sex differences still necessitate further clarification.PMID:38268084 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231225137 (Source: The International Journal of Artificial Organs)

Strategies for decellularization, re-cellularIzation and crosslinking in liver bioengineering
Int J Artif Organs. 2024 Jan 22:3913988231218566. doi: 10.1177/03913988231218566. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiver transplantation is the only definitive treatment for end-stage liver disease and its availability is restricted by organ donor shortages. The development of liver bioengineering provides the probability to create a functional alternative to reduce the gap in organ demand and supply. Decellularized liver scaffolds have been widely applied in bioengineering because they can mimic the native liver microenvironment and retain extracellular matrix (ECM) components. Multiple approaches including chemical, physica...

Citrate anticoagulation in plasma exchange followed by continuous renal replacement therapy in critically ill children
CONCLUSIONS: The overall filtration performance of RCA-PE is superior to that of SHA-PE followed by CRRT. The metabolic complications associated with RCA-PE are mainly metabolic alkalosis that can be improved by using CRRT after RCA-PE and this is a better alternative for anticoagulation during PE in critically ill children.PMID:38229209 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231223375 (Source: The International Journal of Artificial Organs)

Clinical effect of pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with mechanical ventilation: A meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Pulmonary rehabilitation measures can improve the success rate of weaning from mechanical ventilation in ICU patients, shorten the time of mechanical ventilation and ICU hospitalisation and reduce the incidence of related adverse reactions, but the impact on mortality requires further study.PMID:38186004 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231218116 (Source: The International Journal of Artificial Organs)
