Evaluation of erythrocyte membrane oxidation due to their exposure to shear flow generated by extracorporeal blood pump
Int J Artif Organs. 2024 Feb 29:3913988241230942. doi: 10.1177/03913988241230942. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSeveral similarities have been found between shear stress-induced erythrocyte damage and physiological aging of erythrocytes in terms of elevated mechanical fragility, increased erythrocyte aggregation, and decreased membrane surface charge. Accordingly, we hypothesized that blood pump circulation, which generates shear stress, would accelerate erythrocyte aging, manifesting as oxidation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of blood pump circulation on erythrocyte oxidation. Fresh p...

Optimal timing of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination prior to cardiovascular surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass
CONCLUSIONS: Although 40% of the RBD-IgG titers reduce 1 day after CPB surgery, the patients who received the SARS-COV-2 vaccination within an 81-day window prior to the surgery maintained a desirable RBD-IgG level, even up to 1 month after surgery. It may be important to schedule the surgery no later than 81 days after the vaccination.PMID:38415725 | DOI:10.1177/03913988241234475 (Source: The International Journal of Artificial Organs)

Physiologic benefits of veno-pulmonary extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for COVID-19 ARDS: A single center experience
CONCLUSION: VP ECMO in COVID-19 ARDS improves hemodynamics in patients with RV failure, improves oxygenation in patients with refractory hypoxemia and improves the frequency of SDEs.PMID:38418945 | DOI:10.1177/03913988241234543 (Source: The International Journal of Artificial Organs)

Thick silk fibroin vascular graft: A promising tissue-engineered scaffold material for abdominal vein grafts in middle-sized mammals
Int J Artif Organs. 2024 Feb 28:3913988241234547. doi: 10.1177/03913988241234547. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAbdominal vein replacement with synthetic tissue-engineered vascular grafts constructed from silk-based scaffold material has not been reported in middle-sized mammals. Fourteen canines that underwent caudal vena cava replacement with a silk fibroin (SF) vascular graft (15 mm long and 8 mm diameter) prepared with natural silk biocompatible thread were allocated to two groups, thin and thick SF groups, based on the graft wall thickness. The short-term patency rate and histologic reactions were compared. The patenc...

Step by step enhancement of aesthetics for distal phalangeal prosthetic replacement using neoteric stamp technique: A case report
Int J Artif Organs. 2024 Feb 21:3913988241232315. doi: 10.1177/03913988241232315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis case study delineates the proficient creation of a silicone finger prosthesis, tailored for a patient contending with partial digit amputation. The prosthesis was devised with the overarching goal of reinstating not only the physiological dexterity of the hand but also its aesthetic integrity and the patient's psychological equilibrium. The crafting process entailed a meticulous technique to replicate the intricate texture of the skin in order to guarantee a near normal appearance. Post-prosthesis integratio...

Microaxial mechanical circulatory support after orthotopic heart transplantation
CONCLUSION: Indications for microaxial MCS appear to vary between adult and adolescent patients. Overall improvement in LVEF and cardiac index was observed, however, with suboptimal survival to discharge.PMID:38372215 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231213722 (Source: The International Journal of Artificial Organs)
