Importance of in situ thermal stability after surgical implantation of acellular scaffold
In this study, the thermal stability of two acellular scaffolds, acellular bovine pericardium (S1) and acellular bovine dermis (S2), were investigated by in situ dura repairing experiments. The in situ dura repairing results showed that both samples could successfully integrate with Beagles' dura tissue after 1 month of implantation. S1 remained stable during the 6-month implantation period and no obvious denaturation or degradation was found. However, S2 remained stable only in the first month and denatured at the 2-month dissection timepoint. S2 was completely degraded at 6-month dissection timepoint and no new dura tiss...

Extracorporeal Life Support in Adult Burn Care: A Systematic Review
Int J Artif Organs. 2023 May 22:3913988231177088. doi: 10.1177/03913988231177088. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe sought to review the role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for the management of burn and smoke inhalation injury in the adult patient population. Therefore, we conducted a systematic search of the literature according to specific combination of key words to ascertain the effectiveness of this support strategy. A total of 26 articles were filtered out of 269 and considered suitable for this study. The PICOS approach and PRISMA flow chart were followed for the purposes of our review. Although there...

A case series evaluating the effect of esmolol therapy to treat hypoxemia in COVID-19 patients on VV-ECMO
Int J Artif Organs. 2023 May 22:3913988231176839. doi: 10.1177/03913988231176839. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhen COVID-19 ARDS abolishes pulmonary function, VV-ECMO can provide gas exchange. If oxygenation remains insufficient despite maximal VV-ECMO support, the addition of esmolol has been proposed. Conflict exists, however, as to the oxygenation level which should trigger beta-blocker initiation. We evaluated the effect of esmolol therapy on oxygenation and oxygen delivery in patients with negligible native lung function and various degrees of hypoxemia despite maximal VV-ECMO support. We found that, in COVID-19 pat...
