A Facility-Level Analysis of Nursing Home Compare Five Star Rating and Maryland's Family Satisfaction with Care Survey
This study aimed to compare two care quality frameworks, one based on observable factors and one on family satisfaction.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We merged publicly available 2021 Maryland nursing facility data. The Maryland Health Care Commission surveys long-term care residents' family satisfaction across seven domains. CMS' five-star ratings aggregate inspections, staffing, and quality measures. We used univariate and bivariate statistics to compare the frameworks.RESULTS: The dataset included 220 facilities and 4,610 survey respondents. The average facility rating was 7.70/10 and overall 77% of respondents would rec...

"Stronger than I thought I was": Older Adults' Coping across Two Years of the COVID-19 Pandemic
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Findings suggest older adults had nuanced and shifting coping experiences throughout the initial two years of the pandemic, but overall coped by drawing on life experiences. Our discussion highlights variability in older adults' coping over time and directions for future study and practice.PMID:38109780 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnad164 (Source: The Gerontologist)

The Mediating Role of Proxy Respondents on the Relationship between Cognitive Function and Self-Rated Health
This study investigates the mediating effect of proxy status on the relationship between cognitive impairment and subjectively-rated health.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Respondents from the 2018 wave of the Health and Retirement Study (N=17,146) were included, and the Baron and Kenny method assessed potential mediating role of having a proxy on subjectively-rated health. Subjectively-rated health and proxy status were dichotomously coded, and relationships between cognitive impairment, proxy status, and subjectively-rated health were assessed using logistic regression.RESULTS: Findings indicate that cognitive impairment is...

Effectiveness and Implementation of an Enhance ®Fitness Physical Activity Intervention Specifically in Adults with Arthritis: A RE-AIM Evaluation
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the evidence-based, Enhance®Fitness (EF) physical activity (PA) intervention in improving arthritis symptoms, physical and mental function, and PA in adults with arthritis.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a community-based, randomized, controlled effectiveness trial that switched to a non-randomized controlled trial. Participants were sedentary/low-active adults, aged ≥ 18 years, with self-reported physician-diagnosed arthritis, who were assigned to an immediate (IG) or delayed group (DG) (12-week, wait-list control group). Classes were held thrice weekly for 12 weeks at 17...

Life Space and Activity Space Measurement: Making 'Room' for Structural Racism
Gerontologist. 2023 Nov 28:gnad160. doi: 10.1093/geront/gnad160. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs we age, the ability to move is foundational to health. Life space is one measure of a person's ability to move and engage in activity beyond the home. A separate but related concept is activity space, a measurement of a person's spatial behaviors and visited locations that include social networks, neighborhoods, and institutions. In this article, we integrate the literature on life space and activity space discussing how physical function is not only determined by individual capabilities, but also by the surrounding social and...
