Age-Friendly and Climate Resilient Communities: A Grey Green Alliance
Gerontologist. 2023 Oct 6:gnad137. doi: 10.1093/geront/gnad137. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe world's population is aging while the Earth's climate is warming. A Quantitative Meta-Analysis and Qualitative Meta-Synthesis of Aged Care Residents' Experiences of Autonomy, Being Controlled, and Optimal Functioning
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: The results suggest that autonomy should be supported, and unnecessary external control should be minimized in residential aged care, and we discuss ways the sector could strive for both aims.PMID:37798134 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnad135 (Source: The Gerontologist)

Nature as a 'Lifeline': The Power of Photography when Exploring the Experiences of Older Adults living with Memory Loss and Memory Concerns
We describe a visual ethnography with older adults experiencing subjective or objective memory loss, receiving a cognitive wellbeing group intervention designed to prevent cognitive decline and dementia (APPLE-Tree programme). We aimed to explore lived experiences of people with memory concerns, how participants engaged with this photography and co-design project, and how collaboration with an artist/photographer enhanced this process. Nineteen participants shared photographs reflecting what they valued in their daily lives, their experiences of memory concerns, and the intervention. Fourteen participated in qualitative ph...

Type of Home Care - Informal Versus at Least Some Formal - Matters for Recipients' Perceived Control
This study investigated how receiving home care from different sources was associated with two facets of perceived control (mastery and perceived constraints) among adults with varying levels of physical disability.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2012 and 2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. Community-dwelling adults aged 50 years and older receiving help for at least one activity of daily living (ADL) impairment (N = 884) reported their relationship to each respective caregiver (formal professional and/or informal family or friend), level of ADL impairment, and ratings of perceived control....

Also, a regression analysis was conducted between the sentiment level of each sub-theme and the final star ratings.RESULTS: Online reviews of NHs could be classified into 6 main themes, 18 sub-themes, and 53 initial themes. Among the main themes, the "service quality" received the most reviews, followed by ...

Dementia prevention and individual and socioeconomic barriers: Avoiding "lifestyle" stigma
Gerontologist. 2023 Sep 24:gnad130. doi: 10.1093/geront/gnad130. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent decades have seen exponential growth in research on modifiable risk factors for dementia across the lifespan which has considerably advanced our understanding of brain health. Not all modifiable risk factors are equal, however, in the ease with which they can be addressed. Some individuals and populations face significant barriers to engaging in dementia risk-reduction behaviors. With the evolution of the dementia prevention field, there is a need to broaden our approach from identifying individual risk-factors towards add...
