Subjective Successful Aging Predicts Probability of Mortality Over 9 Years Among Adults Aged 50-74
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Findings provide evidence that lower SSA scores reveal greater risk for mortality beyond demographic, health, and lifestyle variables. A brief assessment of SSA can provide unique clinical information and be used to identify people who might benefit from interventions to reduce mortality risk.PMID:37882371 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnad148 (Source: The Gerontologist)

Community-Engaged Research with Latino Dementia Caregivers: Overcoming Challenges in Community Advisory Board Development
This article describes how our work addressed challenges in CABs related to unbalanced power relations, language barriers, the value of time, and low research knowledge and health literacy.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Nine Latino CAB members, including older Latino caregivers, were trained in a comprehensive program designed to increase knowledge about health research methods and ethics, cognitive health, and cultural adaptation methods. Members completed pre- and post-training measures of Alzheimer's disease knowledge, attitudes and beliefs toward research, and a satisfaction survey.RESULTS: Results from the satisfaction ...

Black Appalachia's Oldest Old: Untold Stories of experienced racism and coping with religious practices/beliefs
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Racism experienced by African American participants was likely countered by religious practices/beliefs inspired through intergenerational teachings with affiliations to the Black Church. These experiences of the oldest old African Americans living in communities of the Southern Appalachia U. S illustrates the pervasive nature of racism. The religious beliefs that are frequently transmitted intergenerationally through the Black Church are relevant to understand present day encounters with racism among African Americans and possibly other communities of color.PMID:37875131 | DOI:10.1093/geront/g...

The Joys and Stresses of Social Relationships and the Effect on Resiliency During the Covid-19 Pandemic: A National Survey of US Older Adults
We described trends in resilience among US adults aged 50-80 years approximately one and half years after the onset of the pandemic, compared with before the pandemic, and evaluated associations between relationships and resilience.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were from the National Poll on Healthy Aging (N=2,100) in August 2021. Respondents rated their resiliency as compared with before the pandemic (more, about the same, or less) and different types of relationships (spouse/partner, friends, neighbors) as sources of joy and/or stress during the pandemic (a lot, some, very little, and not at all). Multinomial logisti...

Older adult falls in the community: Does unsafe home environment have a risk role through the mediating effect of functional limitations?
We examined baseline conditions of home disorders, unsafe bathroom settings, unsafe house/building features, and house disrepairs in 2018 and their relation with subsequent falls in 2019, after controlling for covariates. To assess whether ADL/IADL limitations mediated this relationship, we employed the Karlson-Holm-Breen (KHB) methodology.RESULTS: In 2019, the self-reported prevalence of falls among older adults was estimated at 34.68%. While baseline home disorders had both a direct (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR]: 1.14, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]:1.03,1.26) and an indirect effect through limitations in ADL and IADL (aOR: 1...

Development and Validation of a Revised Ambivalent Ageism Scale for Use in the Health Care Sector: The AAShc
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: The AAShc appears to be a valid and reliable scale to measure ageism among paramedical students. This scale can be a useful tool to reduce ageism towards older adults in the health care sector.PMID:37846520 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnad136 (Source: The Gerontologist)
