SSRI use in late pregnancy increases risk of internalizing disorders in preschool offspring, no risk to development
Prenatal exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has no substantial increased risk on children's behavioral, emotional, and social development, according to a study that followed mother‐child dyads from pregnancy through age 5 of the child. There was a risk for great anxious/depressed behaviors in the children when the SSRI was taken during late pregnancy only, but unmeasured confounding can't be ruled out, the researchers concluded. Teens presenting with late ‐onset ADHD symptoms and requesting stimulant medication: Next step?
When an adolescent or young adult seeks stimulant medication for late‐onset attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, what kind of screening instruments can be used, and what are possible alternative causes of symptoms? Researchers examined psychiatric assessments and discovered that only 2.5% of the teens who screened positive in initial checklists actually had late‐onset ADHD. Some of those teens had undetected childhood ADHD. The main reason for impairing late‐onset ADHD symptoms that was not ADHD was substance use — in this study, marijuana use. Prevalence of ADHD and predictors of stimulant and antipsychotic medications
The main predictor of a child with attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) being prescribed psychotropic medications in addition to stimulants is a psychiatric consultation, according to a new study from Canada. Researchers looked at children in Ontario to determine the predictors of medication prescription for ADHD in youth, as well as the prevalence and characteristics of youth with ADHD. FDA revises labeling to limit pediatric use of prescription cough and cold medicines
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced last month that it is requiring safety labeling changes to limit the use of prescription opioid cough and cold medicines containing codeine or hydrocodone in children younger than 18 years old because the serious risks of these medicines outweigh their potential benefits in this population. After safety labeling changes are made, these products will no longer be indicated for use to treat cough in any pediatric population and will be labeled for use only in adults aged 18 years and older. Labeling for the medications also is being updated with additional safety information fo...

Folic acid and multivitamins before and during pregnancy linked to lower risk of ASD in offspring
Researchers examined the associations between maternal folic acid and multivitamin supplements before and during pregnancy, and the risks of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in their offspring. They found that maternal use of folic acid and/or multivitamin supplements before or during pregnancy was associated with a lower likelihood of ASD in offspring compared to mothers who had no folic acid or multivitamin supplements before or during pregnancy. Prematurity and low birth weight associated with increased risk of ADHD diagnosis and symptoms: Meta ‐analysis
Preterm and low‐birth‐weight (LBW) newborns have an increased risk of being diagnosed with attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared with controls, researchers have found in a literature review. These risks are even greater as preterm and low birth weight are more extreme. The researchers, whose study is published in the January issue of Pediatrics, found that very preterm/very low‐birth‐weight (VP/VLBW) subjects have an increased risk of ADHD diagnosis and symptomatology, and the findings are even stronger in the extremely preterm/extremely low‐birth‐weight (EP/ELBW) group. They recommend that...

Physicians present case for legalizing marijuana
Three eminent physicians present a compelling case for legalizing marijuana in the November issue of the American Journal of Public Health. The opinion piece, “The Physicians' Case for Marijuana Legalization,” written by David L. Nathan, M.D.; H. Westley Clark, M.D., J.D.; and Joycelyn Elders, M.D., states that it's time for federal law to change and make marijuana legal, as it is for medical purposes in 29 states and for any purpose, including recreational, in eight states. More than 60 percent of Americans favor legalization. And most important, marijuana prohibition “has done more damage to public health than has ...
