Task force says not enough evidence to support screening teens for alcohol
Last month, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) came out with its recommendations for alcohol screening, including of adolescents. The statement, published inJAMA, says the state of the evidence is insufficient regarding the benefits and harms of screening and behavioral counseling to adolescents regarding unhealthy alcohol use. Patients on methadone are protected against overdose even with potent illicit fentanyl
Illicit fentanyl is so potent it can kill in seconds and has been blamed for the continued high rate of opioid overdose deaths, even as prescription opioids and heroin are declining as the culprits. It is so strong that some people have wondered if therapeutic doses of methadone would protect patients against the effects. Researchers in Rhode Island have found that, indeed, therapeutic doses of methadone do protect against some of these effects and, furthermore, help patients achieve abstinence from illicit opioids. ACEs and AUDs linked; medication development at NIAAA
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the probability of developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD), George F. Koob, Ph.D., director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), toldCPU last month. He also discussed challenges to work on medications to treat AUDs. Clozapine effectiveness assessed in RCTs of children and adolescents
Clozapine, the drug of choice for treatment ‐resistant schizophrenia in adults, has only limited research supporting its use in children and adolescents. Researchers, writing in theJournal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, found that 95% of pediatric patients admitted to a hospital on, or then placed on, clozapine were discharged on the medication, but stressed that the incidence of adverse effects was high, reinforcing the need for both accurate diagnoses and vigilant monitoring.
