Briefings in surgical teams – a pilot study of experiences and attitudes
While healthcare should not be compared to other High Reliability Organisations (HROs), many lessons, attitudes and transferable practices can be applied and adapted from them to improve patient safety and team morale. Despite briefings improving both patient safety and effective team working, some in healthcare have not valued or actively engaged, deeming them not to be relevant. In this pilot study, we explored the experiences and attitudes to briefings using a 10-question Survey Monkey. This was promoted during a human factors session at the 2023 Association of Surgeons in Training Conference (ASiT) and at a large NHS Tr...

Optimising oral cancer reconstruction: A retrospective cohort study on the modified radial forearm free flap technique for eliminating secondary donor site utilisation
The increasing prevalence of oral and oropharyngeal cancer1 –3 has led to an increase in the use of microvascular free flaps for reliable and anatomically accurate orofacial reconstruction4–5. Since its introduction in the 1980s, the vascularised radial forearm free flap (RFFF) has become a widely used method for reconstructing orofacial soft tissues fol lowing tumour ablation, with flap survival rates between 90% and 98.3%6–8. However, harvesting the radial artery can lead to hand ischemia and reduced functionality9–10, and damage to the sensory branch of the radial nerve can result in diminished grip strength and...

Clinical study with sandblasted dental implants: a 17-year retrospective follow up
Sandblasting is a standard procedure used for treating dental implant (DI) surfaces to enhance the osseointegration with known clinical success. This clinical study aimed to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of DIs with external hexagon connections and a surface sandblasted with calcium phosphate. Two hundred and seventy-five Mg-osseous ™ (Mozo-Grau™) screw DIs were placed in 86 patients using a two-stage surgical technique and conventional loading protocol (at three months). Dental implants and prosthetic clinical findings were evaluated during a 17-year follow up. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Farewell from outgoing Editor in Chief
It seems like only yesterday that I was appointed to a 10-year role, initially as the Deputy Editor and then, these final 5 years as the Editor-in-Chief. Ten years and over 12,000 manuscripts later, the time has come for me to step down. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Balancing the Scales of Safety: The Criminal Laws Impact on Patient Safety and Error Reduction
The chance of death from medical error within the hospital setting is 33,000 times greater than dying in an aircraft crash. Despite patient safety being central to healthcare delivery across the world, medical errors and patient harm remain prevalent. This review evaluates the role of criminal law in regulating healthcare across England and Wales using prior legal case studies and focusing on the offence of Gross Negligence Manslaughter (GNM). It further examines the extent to which the law promotes patient safety to fatal errors in healthcare. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Minimal clinically important difference in maxillofacial trauma patients: a prospective cohort study
The present study estimated the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for pain on a visual analogue scale – numerical rating scale (VAS-NRS) and mean bite force (MBF) in patients treated for maxillofacial trauma (MFT). This cohort study included 120 MFT patients treated according to AO principles. Preoperative and four-week postoperative pain on the VAS-NRS, and MBF were measured to calculate MCIDs as indicators of functional rehabilitation. The patient’s perspective of the treatment was assessed using a four-item anchor question. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Use of autogenous fascia lata slings in the surgical correction of ptosis: A systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis
Ptosis is an abnormally low-positioned upper eyelid. Management depends on severity, aetiology, and function of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle (LPS). This review evaluates the success of autogenous fascia lata slings (AFLS) in the surgical management of ptosis, together with complication and reoperation/revision rates. A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar PROSPERO, Dynamed, DARE, EMBASE, Cochrane, and BMJ databases (PROSPERO registration: CRD42023475090), and 30 studies (3690 patients and 5059 eyes) were included. Use of supermicrosurgery in craniofacial and head and neck soft tissue reconstruction: a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis
Supermicrosurgery is an evolving approach in the reconstruction of head and neck (HN) and craniofacial (CF) defects. This systematic review aims to evaluate the use of supermicrosurgery for arterial or combined arterial and venous anastomoses in the reconstruction of HN and CF soft tissue defects, and the associated success, total complication, and reoperation rates. A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Dynamed, DARE, EMBASE, Cochrane, and British Medical Journal (BMJ) electronic databases (PROSPERO ID: CRD42023476825). Relevance of sarcopenia in elderly patients undergoing surgery for oral squamous cell carcinoma
This study aimed to establish the relevance of sarcopenia in elderly patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) undergoing surgery. This retrospective, single-centre, cohort study included patients over the age of 75 years who were diagnosed with OSCC between 2007 and 2016. Cross-sectional imaging of the neck was used to predict the Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI) using validated equations. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Molecular landscape of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: A systematic review
Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a rare oral potentially malignant disorder characterised by multifocal origin and unpredictable long-term evolution to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) or oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC). There are currently no predictive biomarkers in clinical use. We aim to explore the genomic profile of PVL. 685 cases in 26 studies were included in this review. Genomic data were presented in 15% of studies and biomarker analysis in 85% of studies. At first clinical presentation, PVL is characterised by high Loss of Heterozygosity (LOH) similar to OSCC and low copy number alterations (CNA). Knowledge of Head and Neck Cancer Among Medical Students in the UK
Head and neck cancers (HNC) refer to malignancies found in mucosal surfaces anywhere from the paranasal sinuses to the larynx including the various glands and cavities. Between the years 2016 and 2018, there were about 3900 new cases every year amongst women and 8600 new cases per year for men, making it the 13th most common cancer in women and 4th most common amongst men.The aim of our study is to evaluate the amount and type of teaching UK medical students receive on head and neck cancer as well as assess their current knowledge of these cancers.
