53. Submental intubation in orthognathic surgery: A 17 year experience
Oral& maxillofacial surgery often involve surgeons and anaesthetists working in the same area hence securing the airway is critical for the patient. Endotracheal intubation with either oral or nasal tubes are often used. However in orthognathic cases, submental intubation allows precise assessment of midline, incisal display, cant and passive nasolabial complex. 54. Time from surgery to adjuvant treatment in the management of Oral Cancer – National findings from the BAOMS QOMS initiative
There is published evidence to indicate that delay to the start of adjuvant treatment following surgery for oral cancer has a significant impact on survival outcomes. This has been recognised as an important metric which has been selected as a quality indicator within the BAOMS QOMS initiative. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

55. Patient Concerns Inventory: The impact of type of surgery and adjunctive radiotherapy on Oral Cancers patients
The Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI) is a tool used on our Head and Neck Cancer (HANC) multidisciplinary (MDT) clinics. It allows the evaluation of the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients ’ post-surgery. Treatment of HANC may involve surgery with or without adjunctive radiotherapy (RT). We aim to identify whether there are any differences in reported concerns according to the type of surgery undergone and whether or not they underwent adjunctive RT. 56. Cross-sectional study of the physical functioning of head and neck cancer survivors up to one year post treatment in an Irish National Cancer Centre
Head and Neck cancer (HNC) incorporates cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, nasal cavity and sinuses. People living with HNC experience similar survivorship needs to other cancer types, yet unique biopsychosocial issues. Little is known about their global physical function. The primary aim of this study was to profile the physical function of HNC survivors following completion of their treatment. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

58. Contralateral drainage in oral cavity cancer in a sentinel lymph node biopsy referral centre
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNB) determines lymph node status on a patient specific basis. This approach identifies first echelon nodes outside the typically dissected neck levels, such as well-lateralised tumors which drain to the contralateral neck. We aim to report the incidence of contralateral/bilateral drainage in well-lateralised oral cavity cancers and identify predictive factors. 60. The microsurgical anastomosis system for arteries and veins – A prototype study
Introduction: Globally, hard and soft-tissue loss from disease and trauma is often replaced by free-tissue flap transfer requiring blood vessel micro-anastomosis. These microsurgical anastomoses are performed by devices or hand-suturing, the latter being technique sensitive and has a steep learning curve, to ensure proper vessel alignment and leakage-free. Existing mechanical anastomosis devices are non-biodegradable and used more popularly for veins. Other limitations include difficulties with use in arteries, device palpability over skin, device extrusion, infections and limitations during growth in children. (Source: Th...

61. Surgical management of cT2 tongue squamous cell carcinomas (SCC): Flap reconstruction vs primary closure – Margins, function, and outcomes
Tongue tumours staged cT2 (TNM8) encompass a wide volumetric range. Management of the post-resection defect may be influenced by tumour size, location, patient factors, and neck management. This may impact margin control rates, functional outcomes, and survival. We analysed cT2 tongue SCC ’s undergoing wide local excision (WLE) ± reconstruction to understand these outcomes. 63. Anti-thrombotics and surgical dermatology of the head and neck: Stop or don ’t stop!
With an ageing worldwide population, an increasing number of patients are developing skin cancer and a significant percentage of these are on Anti-thrombotics. Cessation of these medications have the potential to cause significant systemic complications, and should be justified prior to stopping. Hence the British Society of Surgical Dermatology (BSDS) have produced guidance and recommendations for patients on anti-thrombotics undergoing cutaneous surgery. Our aim was to audit our current practise against these guidelines, with the hope of improving our standard of care. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)
