Increased incidence of adult gonococcal keratoconjunctivitis at two tertiary eye hospitals in Western Europe: clinical features, complications and antimicrobial susceptibility
CONCLUSION: The notable increase of GKC cases in our centres in 2023 may indicate a rise across Western Europe. Enhanced, sustained, national surveillance of GKC is essential to establish incidence and antimicrobial susceptibility, to inform treatment guidelines and guide appropriate public health response.PMID:38365428 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324750 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Continuous 24-hour intraocular pressure monitoring in normal Chinese adults using a novel contact lens sensor system
CONCLUSION: Continuous 24-hour IOP output from the CLS in normal Chinese was stable with a comparable mean level between day and night, as well as scattered acrophase and bathyphase. The 24-hour IOP mean increased with age, and IOP variations were positively correlated to age and male sex.PMID:38365429 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323361 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Assessing the medical reasoning skills of GPT-4 in complex ophthalmology cases
CONCLUSION: Improved prompting enhances GPT-4's performance in complex clinical situations, although it does not surpass ophthalmology trainees in our context. Specialised large language models hold promise for future assistance in medical decision-making and diagnosis.PMID:38365427 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-325053 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Variant and clinical landscape of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy based on 1516 families with mtDNA variants in a tertiary centre
CONCLUSION: Compared with non-East Asians, Chinese LHON patients had higher proportions of m.11778G>A and m.3635G>A and lower m.3460G>A mutations. A novel progression grade derived from optic disc category was proposed. The prognostic matrix indicated that lower grade and younger-onset age are the most favourable prognostic factors.PMID:38346855 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323557 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Is primary trabeculectomy cost-effective for patients with advanced primary open angle glaucoma? Results from the Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma Study economic model
CONCLUSION: In patients presenting with advanced POAG, trabeculectomy has a higher probability of being cost-effective over a patient's lifetime compared with medical treatment.PMID:38336459 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323390 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)
