Association between age-related macular degeneration and risk of incident cancer
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a possible association between AMD and several cancers. Increased renal and thyroid cancer risk among patients with AMD could indicate that AMD is associated with hypervascular cancer. Further studies in which additional databases are used and the underlying detailed mechanisms evaluated are needed to validate our results.PMID:38418207 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323874 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Relationship of posterior peripheral corneal layers and the trabecular meshwork: an immunohistological and anatomical study
CONCLUSION: The TZ between DM, PDL and TM shows a unique histological structure at the periphery. The collagen and elastin fibres of the TM are continuous with the PDL. The structures are firmly attached to each other. These findings provide structural information that is relevant to the preparation of DMEK donor tissue.PMID:38418206 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324844 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Diagnostic utility of point-of-care ultrasound and optical coherence tomography for papilloedema in children: a prospective pilot study
CONCLUSION: Both OCT and POCUS are potentially useful tools to help diagnose papilloedema in children. Larger studies are needed to further define the role and accuracy of POCUS and OCT in assessing papilloedema in children.PMID:38413191 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324552 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Reproducibility of consecutive automated telemetric noctodiurnal IOP profiles as determined by an intraocular implant
CONCLUSIONS: Twenty-four hour automatic measurements of IOP are correlated on consecutive days and, though to a lesser degree, with self-measurements. Therefore a virtual 24-hour IOP curve might be constructed from self-measurements. Both options provide an alternative to frequent in-office IOP measurements.PMID:38408856 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2022-323080 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Automated identification of fleck lesions in Stargardt disease using deep learning enhances lesion detection sensitivity and enables morphometric analysis of flecks
CONCLUSIONS: AI-based detection of flecks shows greater sensitivity than human graders but with a higher false-positive rate. With further optimisation to address current shortcomings, this approach could be used to prescreen subjects for clinical research. The feasibility and utility of quantifying fleck morphology in conjunction with AI-based segmentation as a biomarker of progression require further study.PMID:38408857 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323592 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Genetic landscape and prognosis of conjunctival melanoma in Chinese patients
CONCLUSIONS: The molecular landscape of CoM in Chinese patients was updated with new findings. A relatively high frequency of mutated FAT4 was determined in Chinese CoM patients, and decreased expression of FAT4 was found in patients with worse prognoses. In addition, both BRAF mutations and FAT4 mutations could serve as predictive factors for CoM patients.PMID:38383070 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324306 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)
