Ocular inflammatory events following COVID-19 vaccination: reporting of suspected adverse drug reactions to regulatory authorities in the UK
CONCLUSION: Ocular inflammatory events following COVID-19 vaccination have a very rare prevalence in the UK. There is no increase in the reporting rate of uveitis, optic neuritis and scleritis following COVID-19 vaccination when compared with the range of incidence in the UK population. The Yellow Card System represents a vital instrument within the domain of pharmacovigilance, empowering patients and healthcare professionals to contribute to the ongoing monitoring of medication safety.PMID:38041661 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324503 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Age-matched analysis of axial length growth in myopic children wearing defocus incorporated multiple segments spectacle lenses
CONCLUSIONS: DIMS spectacle lenses can bring the AL growth rate of myopic children to the level of physiological AL growth rate, indicating 100% reduction of excessive myopic AL growth, independent of age and baseline AL. Older children and children with eyes with high AL have the risk to have increased AL growth without treatment.PMID:38041675 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324508 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Early use of intravitreal triamcinolone to inhibit traumatic proliferative vitreoretinopathy: a randomised clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: Early intravitreal TA injection for OGI effectively reduces TPVR, increases surgical success and improves visual prognosis.PMID:38041678 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324318 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Effects of orbital decompression on duction, cyclotorsion and diplopia
CONCLUSION: After orbital decompression, incidence of new-onset constant diplopia was 11% and 22% of the patients had partial or complete improvement of their diplopia. The changes in duction, cyclodeviation and horizontal deviation showed a statistical but not clinical difference. Patients with GO and a preoperatively restricted elevation of <19° are at risk of developing new-onset constant diplopia. In addition, preoperative incyclodeviation may worsen after decompression surgery.PMID:38041682 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323480 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Retinal detachment risk in the fellow eyes of patients presenting with retinal tears in more than two quadrants
Br J Ophthalmol. 2023 Nov 28:bjo-2023-323295. doi: 10.1136/bjo-2023-323295. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiterature discussing fellow eye risk in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment secondary to posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is limited, particularly in subgroups where this risk may be greater than the general population. In this retrospective consecutive case series with 107 study patients, the risk of retinal tears in fellow eyes of patients with horseshoe tears in three or more quadrants of their presenting eye, secondary to PVD, was 81%. The fellow eye risk is high in this subgroup of patients, and it...

Genomics enabling personalised glaucoma care
Br J Ophthalmol. 2023 Nov 21:bjo-2023-324618. doi: 10.1136/bjo-2023-324618. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlaucoma is a leading cause of visual impairment and a significant public health concern, but despite ongoing advances in our understanding of the disease, several important clinical challenges remain. With the number of affected people projected to increase substantially over coming decades, novel approaches to screening, risk stratification, therapy and glaucoma research are essential to deal with this expanding burden in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Genomics may hold the key to unlocking further biologica...
