Patient perspectives on primary care providers role in long-term opioid therapy
CONCLUSION: Patients' perspective illustrates the important role of HCPs across the spectrum of opioid usage - from initiation to tapering. It underscores the importance of clear risk counselling starting at the initial prescription, continuous medication assessments throughout treatment, addressing tapering at regular intervals and strong support during tapering. These insights carry significant implications for clinical practice, emphasising the importance of informed and patient-centred care when it comes to opioid use for chronic non-cancer pain management.PMID:38499298 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0547 (Source: The British...

Preventive interventions to improve older people's health outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Preventive primary care interventions are beneficial to older people's functional ability and SRH but not other outcomes. To improve primary care for older people, future programmes should consider delivering care in alternative settings, for example, home visits and phone contacts, and providing education to patients and health professionals as these may contribute to positive outcomes.PMID:38499364 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0180 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)

Sleep disturbance in people living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment: a realist review of general practice
CONCLUSION: In primary care, sleep disturbance among PLwD or MCI is not adequately addressed. Over-reliance on medication, underutilisation of non-pharmacological strategies, and inflexible care home routines were reported as a result of low confidence in sleep management and resource constraints. This does not constitute effective and person-centred care. Future work should consider ways to tailor the assessment and management of sleep disturbance to the needs of individuals and their informal carers without overstretching services.PMID:38499365 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0171 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)

The burden of acute eye conditions on different healthcare providers: a retrospective population-based study
CONCLUSION: Acute eyecare continues to place considerable burden on GP and A&E services in Wales, particularly in urban areas with greater economic deprivation and lower overall health. This is likely to increase with a rapidly ageing population. With ongoing pathway development to better utilise optometry and pharmacy, and improved public awareness, there may be scope to change this trajectory.PMID:38438268 | PMC:PMC10947371 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2022.0616 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)

Post-hospitalisation asthma management in primary care: a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: A significant proportion of patients do not receive timely follow-up in primary care following asthma-related admissions to hospital, particularly among Black ethnic minority groups.PMID:38438269 | PMC:PMC10947362 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0214 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)
