Cumulative methotrexate dose is not associated with liver fibrosis in patients with a history of moderate to severe psoriasis
CONCLUSION: This study confirms a high prevalence of significant LF in patients with psoriasis. Cumulative methotrexate dose was not associated with LF. Patients with BMI ≥28 kg/m2, metabolic syndrome and diabetes are at higher risk for LF. These risk factor may help to identify when a more detailed liver health assessment is needed.PMID:38366967 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljae069 (Source: The British Journal of Dermatology)

Acceptability of 'as needed' biologic therapy in psoriasis: insights from a multi-stakeholder mixed methods study
CONCLUSION: These data indicate that 'as needed' biologic therapy in psoriasis is acceptable for both patients and clinicians. Formal assessment of clinical effectiveness and cost effectiveness is warranted, to enable the real-world potential of this approach to be realised.PMID:38366988 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljae068 (Source: The British Journal of Dermatology)

Histamine- and Pruritogen-induced Itch is Inhibited by a TRPM8 Agonist in Humans: A Randomized, Vehicle-controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates that the specific TRPM8 agonist gel effectively suppresses human skin itch induced by various pruritogens. These versatile actions suggest cooling agents may be promising treatments for multiple forms of itch stimuli.PMID:38345103 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljae054 (Source: The British Journal of Dermatology)

Prurigo Nodularis: New insights into pathogenesis and novel therapeutics
Br J Dermatol. 2024 Feb 12:ljae052. doi: 10.1093/bjd/ljae052. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrurigo nodularis (PN) is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by intensely pruritic nodules on the skin. PN patients suffer from an intractable itch-scratch cycle leading to impaired sleep, psychosocial distress, and a significant disruption in quality of life. The pathogenesis of PN is associated with immune and neural dysregulation, mediated by inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-4, -13, -17, -22, and -31) and neuropeptides (such as substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide). There is a role for type 2 inflammation i...

Global, Regional, and National Epidemiology of Alopecia Areata: A Systematic Review and Modelling Study
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, 48% of the total Global Burden of Disease regions had insufficient data reporting the prevalence or incidence of AA. Further studies are needed to provide epidemiological information on middle- and low-income countries. Our study can serve as a crucial reference in terms of healthcare policy decisions.PMID:38332643 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljae058 (Source: The British Journal of Dermatology)

Ethical Considerations for Artificial Intelligence in Dermatology: A Scoping Review
Br J Dermatol. 2024 Feb 8:ljae040. doi: 10.1093/bjd/ljae040. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe field of dermatology is experiencing the rapid deployment of artificial intelligence (AI), from mobile applications for skin cancer detection to large language models like ChatGPT that can answer generalist or specialist questions about skin diagnoses. With these new applications, ethical concerns have emerged. In this scoping review, we aim to identify the applications of AI to the field of dermatology and to understand their ethical implications. We utilized a multifaceted search approach, searching PubMed, Medline, Cochrane, a...
