Successful infliximab treatment in siblings with Netherton syndrome: Unveiling a novel SPINK5 gene variant and literature review
Australas J Dermatol. 2024 Feb 28. doi: 10.1111/ajd.14234. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNetherton syndrome (NS) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis. In this article, we present two siblings with NS who harbour a novel variant in the SPINK5 gene and were treated with infliximab infusions. Both patients exhibited the characteristic clinical triad of NS, and their whole exome sequencing analysis revealed a homozygous variant, c.1820+53G>A, in the SPINK5 gene. Notably, this is the first documented instance of homozygosity for this particular variant. Despite the absence of a specific treatment, both patients achie...

Investigating causal relationships between the gut microbiota and inflammatory skin diseases: A Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that some gut microbiota are risk factors for inflammatory skin diseases, providing new information on potential therapeutic targets. Additionally, a possible association with the gut-skin axis was confirmed. Further research is required to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these relationships.PMID:38419189 | DOI:10.1111/ajd.14231 (Source: The Australasian Journal of Dermatology)

Adult genital psoriasis: An updated review for clinicians
Australas J Dermatol. 2024 Feb 28. doi: 10.1111/ajd.14227. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGenital psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that has been reported in up to 63% of patients with psoriasis on other parts of their skin. It has a profound impact on quality of life and sexual function which is often overlooked by current severity scores. Despite its prevalence and disease burden, genital psoriasis remains largely under-reported and under-treated. Historically, this was due to the impracticality and limited efficacy data of standard psoriasis treatments when applied to genital skin. However, there have be...

Alterations in epidermal stem cells within the pilosebaceous unit in atrophic acne scars
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that as inflammatory acne lesions progress, inflammation gradually infiltrates the pilosebaceous unit and affects the resident stem cells. This disruption impedes the normal regeneration of the interfollicular epidermis and adnexal structures, resulting in atrophic acne scars.PMID:38419202 | DOI:10.1111/ajd.14224 (Source: The Australasian Journal of Dermatology)

Alterations in gut microbiome associated with severity of atopic dermatitis in infants
CONCLUSION: Discrepancies in gut microbial composition and functional pathways were observed in infants with mild-to-severe AD. Alterations in butyrate-producing bacteria (Clostridium sensu stricto), sphingolipid-producing bacteria (Parabacteroides, Bacteroides), and related functional pathways were associated with the severity of AD infants.PMID:38419203 | DOI:10.1111/ajd.14237 (Source: The Australasian Journal of Dermatology)
