Does Hearing Impairment Impact Spatial Orientation, Navigation, and Rotation Abilities?
CONCLUSIONS: The study found that individuals with hearing loss exhibited lower performance in various cognitive tasks related to spatial orientation, navigation, spatial learning, mental imagery, and rotation abilities when compared to an age and sex matched control group. In future study, it is imperative to place greater emphasis on hearing loss as a potential detrimental factor in the prediction of spatial cognition impairment.PMID:38130098 | DOI:10.1177/00034894231219127 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)

Foreign Body Reaction Requiring Re-Exploration After Tympanoplasty With Porcine Small Intestinal Submucosa Reconstruction
CONCLUSIONS: We report the first case of post-tympanoplasty reaction with the use of Biodesign acellular porcine graft in a patient with no previous known exposure to meat products. Although this presentation appears to be rare, it reinforces the need for careful patient selection and counseling around the use of porcine or other foreign grafts.PMID:38098236 | DOI:10.1177/00034894231218900 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)

Advances in the Use of Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulator in Adolescents With Down Syndrome and Persistent Obstructive Sleep Apnea-A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: HNS holds promise as an effective treatment option for pediatric patients with DS and persistent OSA after AT and CPAP trials. It significantly improves sleep-disordered breathing, quality of life, and neurocognitive measures, leading to substantial and sustained benefits for these children. While the findings are encouraging, further research is needed to explore the potential of HNS in other pediatric populations without DS and to raise awareness among healthcare providers about this treatment option. Overall, HNS may offer significant long-term benefits for the overall well-being and health of pediatric pat...

Transnasal Humidified Rapid Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange in Endoscopic Esophageal Surgery
CONCLUSION: THRIVE is a feasible, safe, and efficacious means of apneic oxygenation for patients undergoing esophageal endoscopic surgery under general anesthesia with neuromuscular paralysis, which may be particularly beneficial in patients with airway stenosis, as post-intubation changes can have severe clinical implications for this patient population. Obese patients and tobacco smokers may be at increased risk of oxygen desaturation when using THRIVE.PMID:38050852 | DOI:10.1177/00034894231216273 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)
