A systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between heavy smoking and probability discounting
CONCLUSION AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings, which are the first to demonstrate a smaller PD (i.e., prone to risk-taking) in individuals who smoke, shed light on the appropriate analysis method, gender effect, age, and probability options on the PD function.PMID:38290762 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13521 (Source: The American Journal on Addictions)

Systematic review and meta-analysis: Combining transcranial magnetic stimulation or direct current stimulation with pharmacotherapy for treatment of substance use disorders
CONCLUSIONS: Our results show a significant effect; however, is limited by a small number of studies with heterogeneous methodology across intervention methods and SUDs. Additional trials are needed to fully assess the clinical impact and mechanisms of combined brain stimulation and pharmacotherapy. We discuss a possible mechanism for synergism from these treatment combinations.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Adds the first systematic review of combination treatment with TMS or tDCS and MAT in SUD patients to the literature and estimates its overall effect size.PMID:38273429 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13517 (Source: The American Journal on Addictions)

Analysis of nonfatal suicide attempts and demographic characteristics of US military veterans with opioid use disorder: A descriptive VA medical center study
CONCLUSIONS: Gaining a deeper understanding of this patient population can help improve strategies for preventing suicide and treating OUD more effectively.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFIANCE: This study is unique in the current literature for investigating and comparing nonfatal lifetime suicide attempt rates in veterans before and after an OUD diagnosis.PMID:38273434 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13519 (Source: The American Journal on Addictions)

Availability of substance use disorder treatment in Spanish: Associations with state-level proportions of Spanish speakers and treatment facility characteristics in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: Considering that less than a quarter of facilities provide treatment in Spanish, increasing the availability of linguistically appropriate and culturally responsive services for SUD is imperative.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: This national study is the first of its kind to examine associations between estimates of Spanish speakers and treatment facility characteristics associated with counselors that provide treatment in Spanish in outpatient and nonhospital residential SUD treatment.PMID:38264804 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13520 (Source: The American Journal on Addictions)

Extended-release buprenorphine in pregnancy
CONCLUSIONS: Sparse data regarding the use of XR-BUP in pregnant patients limits shared decision-making. Additional evidence will support the growing population of pregnant patients exposed to XR-BUP.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Positive patient experiences using XR-BUP during pregnancy have been previously unreported. This report will contribute to discussions of risks and benefits for future patients using XR-BUP during pregnancy.PMID:38264845 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13518 (Source: The American Journal on Addictions)

Greater vulnerability to cannabis dependence among heavy cannabis user French women
CONCLUSIONS: French women heavy cannabis users are particularly at risk of PTSD and are more likely than men to be dependent despite consuming fewer.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Further studies are needed to clinically quantify cannabis consumption and distinguish its impact on women and men.PMID:38092565 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13503 (Source: The American Journal on Addictions)
