Visual Dysfunction and Occupational Performance in Persons With Parkinson's Disease
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Visual dysfunction related to Parkinson's disease may affect occupational performance. Screening for changes in vision in these individuals may aid occupational therapists in addressing functional independence and activity engagement. What This Article Adds: People with Parkinson's disease may not have a general awareness that the disease can adversely affect visual function. Those individuals with awareness tend to notice changes in vision, and this disease-related visual dysfunction may limit engagement and participation in everyday activities. Active evaluation of visual function in people wit...

Telehealth Versus Face-to-Face Fine Motor and Social Communication Interventions for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Efficacy, Fidelity, Acceptability, and Feasibility
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: TH intervention is feasible and effective in improving fine motor and social communication performance. Clinicians should reduce parental burden and overcome technological issues. What This Article Adds: This study confirmed the efficacy, fidelity, acceptability, and feasibility of delivering seated play, standard of care interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder via telehealth. However, clinicians should work on reducing parental burden and overcoming communication and technological issues related to telehealth.PMID:38048263 | DOI:10.5014/ajot.2023.050282 (Source: The American Jou...

Early Intensive Bimanual Stimulation Program (BB-Bim) for Infants at Risk of Unilateral Cerebral Palsy: A Randomized, Multiple-Baseline, Single-Case Study
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: BB-Bim was feasible and tended to improve bimanual function in infants at risk of unilateral CP. What This Article Adds: Parent-provided daily bimanual stimulation at home is feasible when parents are coached weekly by an occupational therapist. Bimanual stimulation seems to improve functional interactions between the hands among infants at high risk of unilateral CP.PMID:38032289 | DOI:10.5014/ajot.2023.050232 (Source: The American Journal of Occupational Therapy)

Eating and Sensory Features of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Their Typically Developing Peers
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Differing eating and sensory profiles were found between the ASD and TD groups, especially in children with ASD-W. Early eating interventions using sensory stimulations are strongly recommended. What This Article Adds: This study reports novel information derived from the comparisons of children with ASD with eating problems and those with ASD without eating problems with typically developing groups of children.PMID:38018651 | DOI:10.5014/ajot.2023.050226 (Source: The American Journal of Occupational Therapy)

An Examination of Positive and Negative Outcomes During the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Persons With Multiple Sclerosis
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Both persons with MS and HCs were similar in benefit finding and stress management. However, negative outcomes were worse in the MS group. Our findings shed light on the importance of individuals with MS adopting a positive outlook to help during times of adversity. What This Article Adds: Among persons with disabilities such as multiple sclerosis, finding benefits during stressful times can be a potential coping mechanism. Furthermore, resilience and social support should be taken into account to moderate the effects of adverse events.PMID:38015490 | DOI:10.5014/ajot.2023.050287 (Source: The Ame...

Promoting Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Through Caring Communities: Why It Matters to Occupational Therapy
Am J Occup Ther. 2023 Nov 1;77(6):7706347020. doi: 10.5014/ajot.2023.050416.ABSTRACTThe global challenges humanity faces today, such as social and economic inequalities, occupational deprivation, racism, exclusion, displacement and migration crises, violence, wars, and political oppression, all contribute to health and participation inequities (Powell & Toppin, 2021). The depth and breadth of these inequities became strikingly evident and were exacerbated with the coronavirus 2019 pandemic (Khanijahani et al., 2021). More than ever before, we need to apply an occupational perspective to create caring communities that s...

Efficacy of Early Enhanced Occupational Therapy in an Intensive Care Unit (EFFORT-ICU): A Single-Site Feasibility Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This trial demonstrated that occupational therapy is feasible and beneficial in the ICU. Criteria to progress to a full-scale randomized controlled trial were met. This study contributes to embedding ongoing consistency of practice and scope of service delivery for occupational therapy in this field. What This Article Adds: Occupational therapists should be considered core team members in the critical care-ICU, with funding to support ongoing service provision and optimization of patient outcomes based on effective and feasible service delivery.PMID:38015492 | DOI:10.5014/ajot.2023.050230 (Source...
