Medication Use Evaluation of Docusate Sodium in Constipation Prophylaxis and Opioid Induced Constipation at the WPB VA HCS Community Living Center
CONCLUSION: Oral docusate sodium did not reduce the requirement for rescue constipation medications in the WPB VAHCS CLC population. When evaluating constipation treatment, docusate sodium may supply minimal benefit and could be identified as nonessential for deprescribing efforts. Morphine was the most constipating opioid used in this patient population, requiring more aggressive bowel regimens.PMID:37999649 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231218390 (Source: The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care)

Elevating Home Health Aide Input in Co-Creation of COVID-19 Vaccine Messaging
Conclusions: Grounded in the commitment of HHAs and administrators to protecting vulnerable patients, we co-created an adaptable Communication Toolkit to address COVID-19 vaccination misinformation and mistrust among direct care workers.PMID:37991051 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231218455 (Source: The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care)

The Determinants of Inpatient Palliative Care Use in Patients With Pancreatic Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Inpatient palliative treatment in pancreatic cancer patients is associated with an older age, a higher comorbidity burden, non-obesity, insurance status and urban teaching hospitals. Our study suggests that inpatient palliative treatment decreased hospital resource utilization without prolonging survival.PMID:37991926 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231218257 (Source: The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care)

Estimating the Impact of Hospice Care on Key Patient-Family Care Outcomes Using a Nationwide U.S. Probability Sample
Am J Hosp Palliat Care. 2023 Nov 21:10499091231218261. doi: 10.1177/10499091231218261. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHospice is touted as an exemplary model for end-of-life care. However, there is little generalizable evidence estimating benefits of hospice at the national level. Using a national population-based probability sample of U.S. adults with weights applied (data collected Spring/Summer 2015), we conducted six logistic regression models to evaluate linkages between hospice involvement and end-of-life outcomes (pain, home death, presence of family, access to life-prolonging care, respect for spiritual/religious be...

Ketamine for Super-Refractory Status Epilepticus in Palliative Care. A Case Report and Review of the Literature
We report a case of super refractory status epilepticus uncontrolled by multiple anti-seizure medications in an individual with acute liver failure due to hepatic cirrhosis and an obstructive ileocecal mass plus multiple bilateral lung lesions presumed to be metastatic. A ketamine infusion was initiated late in his hospitalization which eliminated the convulsive seizures in less than an hour. The abatement of convulsive seizures allowed his grieving wife to return to her husband's bedside to witness the withdrawal of life sustaining treatment and be present during the final 24 hours of his life. We review the medical liter...

Referrals to Palliative Care Services for Hospitalised COVID-19 Patients: A Systematic Literature Review
CONCLUSIONS: The care provided was generally acute, with a high proportion of end-of-life care referrals and a short time period from hospital admission to referral and from referral to death. This highlights the importance of early integration of palliative care into emergency department (ED) care of critically ill patients.PMID:37975523 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231215797 (Source: The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care)

Supportive Services at End of Life can Help Reduce Acute Care Services: Observations From the Medicare Care Choices Model
CONCLUSIONS: Palliative care approaches that are high-touch, employ clinically trained staff who visit patients in their homes, routinely evaluate how to manage patient symptoms, and are available when needs arise can improve outcomes and decrease costs at the end of life.PMID:37972473 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231216887 (Source: The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care)

Nursing Support for Caregiver Burden in Family Caregivers of Patients With Cancer: A Scoping Review
Conclusion: The results of the scoping review categorized nursing support for caregiver burden in the family caregivers of patients with cancer into 7 components. Future research should examine the feasibility of implementing these components.PMID:37963324 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231215808 (Source: The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care)

Palliative Care for the Elderly With Heart Diseases in Tertiary Health care: A Concept Analysis
CONCLUSION: Collaboration between hospitals, community organizations, transitional palliative care services, and research has the potential to improve early palliative care and the well-being of the elderly cardiac population. Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) competencies play a crucial role in promoting palliative care in the elderly HF population.PMID:37963548 | DOI:10.1177/10499091231213606 (Source: The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care)
